Am 1. September hatte ich bereits berichtet, dass Buena Vista / Disney am 13. Dezember 2011 die Comic-Verfilmung “Rocketeer / The Rocketeer” [USA 1991] von Joe Johnston auf Blu-ray veröffentlichen wird. Mittlerweile ist dazu eine Pressemitteilung erschienen. Leider wird die “20th Anniversary Edition” keinerlei Bonusmaterialien bieten.

Twilight Time, die vor kurzem mit dem von 20th Century Fox lizensierten “Sinuhe, der Ägypter / The Egyptian” [USA 1954, Michael Curtiz] ihre erste Blu-ray Discs auf den Markt gebracht haben, konnten nun eine Lizensierungsvereinbarung mit Sony bekannt geben. Damit ist es dem US-Label möglich, Titel aus der Produktion von Columbia auf Blu-ray Discs mit einer Limitierung von 3.000 Stück über die WebSite Screen Archives zu vertreiben. Am 8. November 2011 erfolgt die Veröffentlichung von “Die geheimnisvolle Insel / Mysterious Island” [GB / USA 1961, Cy Endfield], am 13. Dezember 2011 soll “Die rabenschwarze Nacht / Fright Night” [USA 1985, Tom Holland] folgen. Wenn möglich, wird Twilight Time neben anderen Extras den Blu-ray Discs eine isolierte Musik-Tonspur spendieren.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (September 1, 2011) — Specialty label TWILIGHT TIME has struck a deal with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to license and release classic films from the Sony-owned Columbia Pictures library in high-definition Blu-ray editions. In line with TWILIGHT TIME’s innovative limited series concept, just 3000 units of each title will be produced, aimed at the collector/classic film aficionado market, and available exclusively online through www.screenarchives.com, the nation’s largest independent distributor of specialty soundtracks.
Wenn Terrence Malick einen neuen Film ins Kino bringt, ist dies immer ein Ereignis. Bei “The Tree of Life” [USA 2011] war es eines, das länger als geplant auf sich warten ließ. Ursprünglich sollte der Film im letzten Jahr bei den Filmfestspielen von Cannes seine Premiere feiern, allerdings benötigte Malick mehr Zeit für den Schnitt und die Post-Production, so dass er erst in diesem Jahr in Cannes erstmals gezeigt wurde.
20th Century Fox wird den vieldiskutierten Film am 11. Oktober 2011 in den USA als Blu-ray/DVD-Combo-Pack in den Handel bringen. Als Bonus ist leider nur eine 30-minütige Dokumentation vorgesehen. Ob nach dem “Der schmale Grad / The Thin Red Line“-Deal mit Fox demnächst vielleicht eine “Special Edition” bei Criterion erscheint? Dann vielleicht sogar mit der anscheinend in Arbeit befindlichen 6-Stunden-Fassung? Wunschdenken!
In Deutschland wird “The Tree of Life” am 10. November 2011 bei Concorde erscheinen, in Großbritannien ist es bereits am 31. Oktober 2011 über 20th Century Fox so weit. Frankreich erhält eine DVD/Blu-ray-Combo bereits am 12. Oktober 2011.

Die 70er-Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts waren das Jahrzehnt des Francis Ford Coppola. Nicht nur dass er “Apocalypse Now” in die Kinos brachte, er drehte zwischen dem ersten und dem zweiten Teil von “Der Pate / The Godfather” auch noch den hervorragenden “Der Dialog / The Conversation” [USA 1974] mit Gene Hackman als Abhör-Spezialisten mit Gewissensbissen. In Deutschland ist der Film noch nicht einmal auf DVD erschienen, allerdings war bei Kinowelt/StudioCanal bereits eine DVD/Blu-ray-Veröffentlichung im Gespräch. Diese könnte demnächst Wirklichkeit werden, denn ein HD-Master existiert mittlerweile. Am 25. Oktober 2011 wird Lionsgate den Film in den USA auf Blu-ray vorlegen, in Großbritannien soll er am 31. Oktober 2011 bei Optimum/StudioCanal erscheinen.

Francis Ford Coppola’s celebrated thriller The Conversation makes its first appearance on Blu-ray Disc and Digital Download from Lionsgate. Angekündigt wurde die US-Blu-ray von Brian De Palmas “Dressed to Kill” [USA 1980] aus dem Hause MGM schon vor ein paar Wochen, auf die vollständige Pressemitteilung bin ich allerdings erst jetzt gestossen.
Die amerikanische “Special Edition”-DVD aus dem Jahr 2001 bot gleich zwei Schnittfassungen: Die Unrated-Fassung (104:44 Min.) – die auch auf der Blu-ray vorliegen wird – und die leicht kürzere R-rated-Kinofassung (104:16 Min.). Auf letztere muss man auf der Blu-ray leider verzichten. Viel wichtiger wiegt allerdings, dass die Blu-ray laut Pressemitteilung die originale Mono-Tonspur und den Trailer der DVD vermissen lässt. Ansonsten wird das Bonusmaterial der “Special Edition”-DVD übernommen. Die Blu-ray wird in den USA am 6. September 2011 veröffentlicht.

Am 13. September 2011 wird Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane” [USA 1941] in den USA als “Ultimate Collector’s Edition” auf Blu-ray bei Warner Bros. erscheinen.
Wer noch nicht weiß, wer oder was “Rosebud” ist, sollte den Trailer lieber nicht anschauen.
Vor ca. einer Woche endete das Locarno Filmfestival, welches den Regisseur Vincente Minnelli mit einer Retrospektive bedachte. Zu sehen war natürlich auch sein von Arthur Freed produziertes MGM-Musical “Heimweh nach St. Louis / Meet Me in St. Louis” [USA 1944] mit seiner späteren Frau Judy Garland in der Hauptrolle. 2004 wurde der Film zum 60. Jubiläum als “Two-Disc Special Edition”-DVD in den USA im schönen DigiPack von Warner Bros. veröffentlicht. Die deutsche Ausgabe mußte leider mit einer normalen DVD-Hülle und ohne die Bonus-DVD auskommen. Vorausgegangen war eine “Ultra Resolution”-Restaurierung mit Zuhilfenahme der drei S/W-Kameranegative des 3-Strip-Technicolor-Prozesses. Am 13. Dezember 2011 erscheint das Musical endlich auf Blu-ray in einem DigiBook. Wahrscheinlich wird das Master aus dem Jahr 2004 zum Einsatz kommen, denn von einer erneuten Restaurierung ist in der Pressemitteilung nichts zu erfahren.
Teile der Pressemitteilung wurden anscheinend von der zur DVD aus dem Jahr 2004 übernommen, denn der Zusatz “First time on home video” in Bezug auf die Dokumentation “Hollywood: The Dream Factory” ist nicht korrekt, war dieses Feature doch schon auf der Doppel-DVD enthalten. Anscheinend wird auf der Blu-ray nur die Trailer-Galerie mit Filmen von Minnelli fehlen. Die auf der DVD vorhandene separate Musik-Tonspur wird zwar in der Pressemitteilung nicht genannt, dafür aber in der Werbeanzeige (siehe unten). Dem DigiBook liegt eine Soundtrack-Sampler-CD bei.

Nach der “The Vampire Lovers“-Ankündigung gleich eine weitere Hammer-Films-Veröffentlichung: Am 19. September 2011 wird Roy Ward Bakers “Das grüne Blut der Dämonen / Quatermass and the Pit” [GB 1967] bei Optimum Releasing in digital restaurierter Fassung als “Dual Format Edition” auf Blu-ray und DVD erscheinen. Hoffentlich lassen die ersten beiden Teile der “Quatermass”-Reihe nicht allzu lange auf sich warten.
Dieser Hammer-Films-Klassiker wurde in Deutschland von Anolis als zwanzigster und somit letzter Titel der “Hammer Edition”-Reihe im Jahr 2004 auf DVD veröffentlicht. Die Disc ist seit langem nicht mehr erhältlich und wird bereits zu hohen Preisen gehandelt. Als Bonus wurde außer einigen Trailern, TV-Spots, einer Bildergalerie und dem Filmprogramm nicht viel geboten. In dieser Hinsicht alleine kann die kommende britische Blu-ray schon weitaus mehr punkten.

The third in the trilogy of films based on Nigel Kneale’s seminal Quatermass series, Quatermass & the Pit was made by Hammer Studios in 1967, directed by stalwart Roy Ward Baker and starring Andrew Keir as the titular scientist, battling evil alien forces that threaten to take over the world, and also stars James Donald, Barbara Shelley and Julian Glover. Nigel Kneale’s Quatermass series has been said to have influenced everyone from John Carpenter to Dr Who.
Ein weiterer Film zum 80. Jubiläum der Ealing Studios erscheint am 5. September 2011 mit Robert Hamers wunderbarere Komödie “Adel verpflichtet / Kind Hearts and Coronets” [GB 1949], in der Alec Guinness gleich acht Rollen übernimmt. Optimum veröffentlicht den Film in einer digital restaurierten Fassung auf Blu-ray und DVD. In den USA ist der Film bei Criterion erhältlich, bisher allerdings nur auf DVD.

Perhaps the most perfect of all the Golden-Age Ealing comedies, Kind Hearts and Coronets famously featured Alec Guinness in eight different roles as the unsuspecting members of the aristocratic D’Ascoyne family – bumped off one by one by the scheming, outcast cousin of the family: Louis Mazzini. Mazzini’s mother was a D’Ascoyne by birth, but she ran away with an opera singer and was ostracized by her family as a result. When her dying wish to be buried in the family crypt is refused, Louis vows to get his revenge. As he ascends the social ranks, he is torn between his love for now-married childhood sweetheart, and equally devilish Sibella (Joan Greenwood), and the saintly wife of one of his victims, Edith D’Ascoyne (Valerie Hobson).
Dennis Price’s stunning performance as the ambitious Louis has always been somewhat overshadowed by Guinness, so sit back and admire anew the coolly detached relish with which he dispatches the eight relatives standing between himself, the Dukedom, and revenge. The film featured stunning and inventive cinematography by Douglas Slocombe, and a groundbreaking first-person narrative that, legend has it, inspired Scorsese to make use of the same device in Goodfellas.

Having left Liverpool two days earlier, heading for Jamaica, it sank outside Eriskay, The Outer Hebrides, Scotland, in bad weather, containing 250,000 bottles of whisky. The locals gathered as many bottles as they could, before the proper authorities arrived, and even today, bottles are found in the sand or in the sea every other year.

In Großbritannien ist seit 2004 ein 21-Disc-Set von Universal mit 20 Spielfilmen von Stan Laurel und Oliver Hardy – in Deutschland leider besser bekannt als “Dick und Doof” – und einigen ihrer Kurzfilme erhältlich. Hierzulande hatte sich Kinowelt um die Auswertung der Filme auf etlichen DVD-Veröffentlichungen gekümmert. In den USA erscheint nun am 25. Oktober 2011 ein neues Set mit dem Namen “Laurel & Hardy: The Essential Collection” von RHI Entertainment und Vivendi Entertainment. Dieses umfasst zehn DVDs mit insgesamt 58 Spiel- und Kurzfilmen, die zwischen 1929 und 1940 von Hal Roach produziert wurden. Anders als auf den Universal- und Kinowelt-DVDs sind leider keine Stummfilme des Komiker-Duos enthalten. Die Fime wurden restauriert und teilweise auch um Szenen vervollständigt. Obwohl die DVDs von High-Definition-Mastern erstellt wurden, ist derzeit keine Blu-ray-Veröffentlichung geplant.

Bernardo Bertoluccis zweite Regiearbeit “Vor der Revolution / Prima della rivoluzione / Before the Revolution” [I 1964] wird am 22. August 2011 beim British Film Institute (BFI) als “Dual Format Edition” erscheinen. Somit wird der Film erstmals in HD vorliegen. Ausgestattet ist das BD/DVD-Set mit umfangreichen Bonusmaterialen, diese werden allerdings nur auf der DVD zu finden sein. Auf den Blu-ray Discs des BFI liegen seit Einführung der “Dual Format Editionen” nur Materialien in HD-Auflösung vor. Bomusmaterial, das nur in SD existiert, ist ausschließlich auf den DVDs zu finden.

Das britische Label Eureka hat eine Lizenzvereinbarung mit Universal getroffen. Auf Grund dessen werden demnächst einige Universal-Titel unter anderem auch innerhalb der Masters of Cinema-Reihe auf DVD und/oder Blu-ray erscheinen. Zu den ersten drei Filmen aus diesem Deal gehört “Island of Lost Souls” [USA 1932, Erle C. Kenton] mit Charles Laughton und Bela Lugosi, der bei Masters of Cinema am 24. Oktober 2011 allerdings nur auf DVD erscheint, während Criterion ihn in den USA am 25. Oktober 2011 auch auf Blu-ray bringt. Die Highlights der Ankündigung sind aber die weltweit ersten Blu-ray-Veröffentlichungen von Douglas Trumbulls “Lautlos im Weltraum / Silent Running” [USA 1972] und Orson Welles’ Film-Noir-Meisterwerk “Im Zeichen des Bösen / Touch of Evil” [USA 1958] am 14. November 2011. Drei Schnittfassungen von Welles’ Films existieren. Hier ein Text, den ich vor einiger Zeit dazu geschrieben habe:
Orson Welles drehte den Film für eine Gage von gerade einmal $125.000. Nicht gerade viel, da er nicht nur als Regisseur agierte, sondern auch noch für das Drehbuch verantwortlich war und eine der Hauptrollen spielte. Grundlage für das Drehbuch war der Roman “Badge of Evil” von Whit Masterson, den Welles zusammen mit dem nicht genannten Paul Monash adaptierte. Heraus kam ein düsterer Film Noir voller Intrigen, mit dem Welles bewies, daß es nur eines großartigen Regisseurs bedarf, um aus einer recht einfachen und banalen Story ein Meisterwerk zu machen. Zuvor gelang dies im Film Noir schon Regisseuren wie Howard Hawks mit “The Big Sleep” [1946] und Robert Aldrich in “Kiss me Deadly” [1955], später im Thriller Alfred Hitchcock mit “Psycho” [1960].
Orson Welles sollte aber auch bei diesem Film wieder kein Glück mit der Produktionsgesellschaft, in diesem Fall Universal, haben. Er verbrachte nach den Dreharbeiten im Jahr 1957 mehr als drei Monate mit dem Schnitt des Films, bevor Universal ihm auch diesen Film aus der Hand nahm.
In einer Ausgabe der “Cahiers du Cinema” aus dem Jahr 1958 sagte Welles einmal:
“I could work forever on the editing of a film. [...] I don’t know why it takes me so much time, but that has the effect of arousing the ire of the producers, who then take the film out of my hands.”
