“Chinatown” von Roman Polanski
Am 21. Juni 2011 veröffentlicht Criterion den Film-Noir-Klassiker “Rattennest / Kiss Me Deadly” [USA 1955, Robert Aldrich] auf DVD und Blu-ray. Die New Yorker nennen drei Gründe, den Film in die Sammlung aufzunehmen.
Es ist wieder Mitte des Monats und das heißt, dass Criterion neue Titel ankündigt. Für Juni 2011 sind insgesamt sechs Filme geplant, die alle auf DVD und Blu-ray erscheinen. Das Highlight des Monats ist meiner Meinung nach “Menschen am Sonntag“, vielleicht mein liebster Stummfilm überhaupt. 14. Seit einiger Zeit kursiert in mehreren DVD-Foren das Gerücht, dass Criterion demnächst Charles Laughton einzige Regiearbeit, den hervorragenden “Die Nacht des Jägers / The Night of the Hunter” [USA 1955] mit Robert Mitchum, auf DVD veröffentlichen wird. Dies wurde heute durch den Criterion-Newsletter mit einem “Wacky Animal” bestätigt.
Die Buchstaben auf den Pfoten des Kaninchens sind eindeutig ein Hinweis auf den von Mitchum dargestellten Charakter Harry Powell, der die Wörter “Love” und “Hate” auf seine Finger tätowiert hat. Da die Buchstaben in der Zeichnung blau sind, kann wohl von einer Blu-ray Veröffentlichung ausgegangen werden.
Laut einer Liste von Anfang des Jahres plant Warner Bros. am 5. Oktober 2010 die Veröffentlichung der beiden Bogart-Klassiker “Die Spur des Falken / The Malteses Falcon” [USA 1941, John Huston] und “Der Schatz der Sierra Madre / The Treasure of the Sierra Madre” [USA 1948, John Huston]. Mittlerweile sind die Cover zu den Titeln aufgetaucht.

This must-have collection includes Pushover (1954), Human Desire (1954), The Brothers Rico (1957), Nightfall (1957) and City of Fear (1959). In this second volume, renowned directors Fritz Lang, Phil Karlson and Irving Lerner are joined by Jacques Tourneur and Richard Quine in proving that lust, adultery, greed and revenge all add up to cold, calculated murder. Film Noir Classics II takes viewers on a dark journey among low-lifes and mobsters, cops and gun molls, and the dim-witted, hapless pawns who forever changed the landscape of cinema, and whose doomed paths are as disturbing today as when they were first committed to film.

Im Februar 2010 wurde im Criterion-Forum eine Liste mit Paramount-Filmen veröffentlicht, die von einem Studio namens Olive Films auf DVD veröffentlicht werden sollen. Im ClassicFlix Blog wurden die ersten vier Titel (drei Film Noir und ein Science-Fiction-Film) bekannt gegeben, die am 13. Juli 2010 in den USA erscheinen werden:

Nach längerer Zeit gibt es wieder Neuigkeiten auf dem Columbia Classics Blog von Sony. In einem Artikel über den Kameramann Burnett Guffey wird auf die geplante “Columbia Pictures Film Noir 2“-DVD-Box eingegangen. Drei Filme, bei denen Guffey für die Kameraarbeit zuständig war, werden genannt:

Ob die zweite “Columbia Pictures Film Noir“-Box von Sony nur diese drei oder wie die erste Box doch fünf Filme beinhalten wird, ist bisher nicht bekannt. Zumindest gab es Mitte letzten Jahres schon einen ersten Hinweis auf ein zweites Set mit fünf Filmen, wobei bereits zwei der drei obigen Film Noir genannt wurden.
Ebenfalls neu auf dem Blog ist ein Interview mit Eddie Muller, Autor, Filmhistoriker und Gründer der “Film Noir Foundation”.
Bei DVDTown ist eine Liste mit Blu-ray Disc-Veröffentlichungen aufgetaucht, die Warner Bros. in den USA im Laufe des Jahres zu veröffentlichen plant. Hier die interessantesten Titel, die bisher nicht angekündigt worden sind:

Returning home to Pennsylvania from service in the Korean War, a doctor (Charlton Heston) falls under the spell of a lovely gal (Lizabeth Scott), but they’re “Bad for Each Other” (1953). Co-stars Dianne Foster, Mildred Dunnock. Unless a “displaced person” from World War II can locate the soldier whose testimony can break down “The Glass Wall” (1953) keeping him from entering America, the man faces branding as a criminal fugitive. Vittorio Gassman, Gloria Grahame star. Soundtrack: English. Two-disc set.
Sony scheint zwei “Bad Girls of Film Noir“-Box-Sets zu planen. Laut VideoETA sollen Vol. 1 und Vol. 2 am 9. Februar 2010 in den USA auf DVD erscheinen. Weitere Infos liegen leider noch nicht vor.
Beim Film-Noir-Podcast “Out of the Past” wird “Die blaue Dahlie / The Blue Dahlia” [USA 1946, George Marshall] besprochen.

Costumes by the great Edith Head, and cinematography by Lionel Lindon, who had been nominated for best cinematography just the year before for the Oscar sensation GOING MY WAY. In short, THE BLUE DAHLIA seems to have everything going it’s way. Why, then, does the film fail to deliver the emotional impact of near contemporary titles like THE KILLERS or THE BIG SLEEP?
