In Zeiten von eMail, SMS und Facebook ist der schriftliche Briefverkehr sogar in Filmen nicht mehr allzu präsent. In älteren Filmen war das noch anders. Hier ein Beispiel aus Stanley Donens “Charade” [USA 1963].

Die 20th Century Fox wird zwei ihrer bekanntesten Klassiker der 50er Jahre auf Blu-ray veröffentlichen. “Alles über Eva / All About Eve” [USA 1950, Joseph L. Mankievicz] mit Bette Davis und Anne Baxter und “Die große Liebe meines Lebens / An Affair to Remember” [USA 1957, Leo McCarey] mit Deborah Kerr und Cary Grant werden am 1. Februar 2011 in den USA jeweils in einem DigiBook erscheinen. Das Bonusmatrial wird von den jeweils letzten DVD-Editionen übernommen.

“Alles über Eva / All About Eve” [USA 1950, Joseph L. Mankievicz]

From the moment she glimpses her idol on Broadway, Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter) strives relentlessly to upstage Margo Channing (Bette Davis). Cunningly stealing Margo’s role, Eve then disrupts the lives of Margo’s director boyfriend (Gary Merrill), and her other friends in this juicy, witty drama.

Joseph Mankiewicz’s “captivating” (Variety) 1950 Best Picture Academy Award-winning film about backstage backstabbing earned an Oscar nomination for star Bette Davis in the performance many consider her finest. Nominated for a record 14 awards, the scintillating film also led to Oscars for Mankiewicz as Director and Writer, the honors also went to Sound Recording and Costume Design, and George Sanders was named Best Supporting Actor.

Ertsmals wird Criterion in einem Monat mehr Titel auf Blu-ray als auf DVD veröffentlichen. Das Verhältnis beträgt vier zu zwei, wobei zwei der Filme, die nun in HD erscheinen, bereits als DVD erhältlich sind: Stanley Donens “Charade” [USA 1963] und Jean-Luc Godards “Außer Atem / À bout de souffle / Breathless” [F 1960, Jean-Luc Godard]. Bei den anderen beiden Filmen handelt es sich um Nagisa Ôshimas “Furyo – Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence / Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence” [J / GB 1983] und Terrence Malicks Kriegsfilm “Der schmale Grat / The Thin Red Line” [USA 1998]. Keine großen Überraschungen, denn dass diese Titel in diesem Jahr erscheinen sollten, war bereits bekannt.

Warner Bros. hat es vorgemacht mit der “Warner Archive Collection” und nun folgen Universal und Turner Classic Movies (TCM) dem schlechten Vorbild: DVD-on-Demand scheint derzeit das Stichwort zu sein, wenn es um die Veröffentlichung von Backcatalog-Titeln geht. Gebrannte DVD-R zum Vollpreis, bei denen nicht bekannt ist, wie lange deren Haltbarkeit ausfällt. Im Gegensatz zu den Warner-Discs scheinen die Scheiben aus der “TCM Vault Collection presented by Universal“-Reihe wenigstens zum Teil mit Bonusmaterial ausgestattet zu sein. Wie es mit Lieferungen außerhalb der USA aussieht, ist bisher nicht bekannt. In dem Bereich sieht es z.B. bei der Warner-Reihe schlecht aus.

New Titles Available Each Quarter, Including Five Memorable Horror Titles, Three Early Cary Grant Vehicles and a Timeless Holiday Classic

TCM to Present Special Telecasts of the Films

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and Universal Studios Home Entertainment (USHE) have entered into an extensive new partnership to offer classic movie fans rare vintage films, all digitally remastered, on DVD on a made-to-order basis. The TCM Vault Collection Presented by Universal marks USHE’s first foray into the manufactured-on-demand (MOD) arena. TCM began offering MOD featuring lost titles from the RKO library.

TCM and USHE are working to remaster a number of great titles never before available on DVD, with several never available on home video at all. The first titles made available include five chilling horror films, three early Cary Grant pictures and the unsung 1940 holiday classic Rememberthe Night, starring Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray and scripted by the great Preston Sturges. The films will be made available by request on DVD via TCM.com for the first time during the fourth quarter of 2009. TCM host Robert Osborne will provide introductions for selected titles, which will also include supplemental materials compiled by TCM and extensive material from the TCM archives. In addition, TCM will present exclusive premieres of the movies over the next six months.

Ein brutaler Cary Grant im Paramount-Film “The Woman Accused” [USA 1933, Paul Sloane], gefunden bei perlentaucher.de. “Cary Grant, als er noch aussah wie Sylvester Stallone …” Stimmt! :D

Warner Bros. hat die ersten Blu-ray Disc-Titel für Dezember 2009 angekündigt. Am 4. Dezember erscheinen laut Area DVD in Deutschland diese drei Klassiker:

• “Der unsichtbare Dritte / North by Northwest” [USA 1959, Alfred Hitchcock]
• “Flammendes Inferno / The Towering Inferno” [USA 1974, John Guillermin, Irwin Allen]
• “Vom Winde verweht / Gone with the Wind” [USA 1939, Victor Fleming, George Cukor (uncredited), Sam Wood (uncredited)]
