Jean Renoirs “French Can Can / French Cancan” [F / I 1954] wird am 7. November 2011 beim British Film Institute (BFI) als “Dual Format Edition” erscheinen. Eine neue digitale Restaurierung des Films wurde bereits im August 2010 beim französischen Label Gaumont auf Blu-ray veröffentlicht. Obwohl die Disc in den meisten Kritiken überaus positiv bewertet wurde, habe ich meine Probleme mit der Scheibe, da sie gerade in dunklen Bildpartien dazu neigt, im Schwarz abzusaufen.

Bei der Blu-ray-Erstauflage von “Ein Herbstnachmittag / Sanma no aji / An Autumn Afternoon” [J 1962, Yasujirô Ozu] des British Film Institutes (BFI) hat sich beim Encoding ein Fehler eingeschlichen. Auf der BD-25 sind nur 13.783 MB belegt. Mittlerweile gibt es eine Neuauflage mit einer Speicherbelegung von 22.487 MB. Bei Interesse an der Neuauflage kann die alte Blu-ray umgetauscht werden. Das BFI dazu:

Bernardo Bertoluccis zweite Regiearbeit “Vor der Revolution / Prima della rivoluzione / Before the Revolution” [I 1964] wird am 22. August 2011 beim British Film Institute (BFI) als “Dual Format Edition” erscheinen. Somit wird der Film erstmals in HD vorliegen. Ausgestattet ist das BD/DVD-Set mit umfangreichen Bonusmaterialen, diese werden allerdings nur auf der DVD zu finden sein. Auf den Blu-ray Discs des BFI liegen seit Einführung der “Dual Format Editionen” nur Materialien in HD-Auflösung vor. Bomusmaterial, das nur in SD existiert, ist ausschließlich auf den DVDs zu finden.

Im nächsten Jahr möchte das British Film Institute (BFI) die “Hitchcock 9” – die neun verbliebenden der zehn Stummfilme von Alfred Hitchcock – in restaurierten Fassungen präsentieren. In einem Video werden einige Fragen zu den Restaurierungsarbeiten beantwortet.
Anfang Februar 2011 hatte ich berichtet, dass das British Film Institute (BFI) im Mai 2011 Luis Buñuels “Das goldene Zeitalter / L’âge d’or” [F 1930, Luis Buñuel] als “Dual Format Edition” veröffentlichen wird. Zu dem Zeitpunkt war geplant, dass der Kurzfilm “Ein andalusischer Hund / Un chien andalou” [F 1929, Luis Buñuel, Salvador Dalí] als Bonus auf der DVD enthalten sein soll. Mittlerweile wurden weitere Details zum Set bekannt. “Ein andalusischer Hund” wird nun auch in 1080p auf der Blu-ray inklusive zweier Scores und eines Audiokommentars enthalten sein, allerdings handelt es sich weiterhin um die Restaurierung aus dem Jahr 1960, obwohl (so weit ich weiß) eine aktuelle Restaurierung aus Spanien existiert. Der Veröffentlichungstermin hat sich um eine Woche auf den 30. Mai 2011 verschoben.

A sinister yet poignant chronicle of a couple’s struggle to consummate their frenzied desire in the face of a stream of obstacles, in the form of bourgeois society and the Church, the film was banned and vilified for many years for its subversive eroticism and furious dissection of ‘civilised’ values.
Extras include a new HD transfer of the 1960 restoration of Un Chien Andalou, Buñuel and Dalí’s provocative debut which created a scandal at its premiere. Presented here with the restoration score, based on Buñuel’s notes, the BFI has also commissioned musicmakers Mordant Music (who re-scored an array of 70s and 80s public information films and documentary shorts produced by the Central Office of Information (COI) last year for the startling BFI DVD release MisinforMation) to create an alternative soundtrack option, which is premiered on this release.
In addition to Robert Short’s fascinating filmed introduction and audio commentaries for both L’Âge d’or and Un Chien Andalou, this comprehensive release is completed by A Propósito de Buñuel – a feature-length documentary on the life and work of Luis Buñuel, by José Luis López-Linares and Javier Rioyo.

Am 1. Juni 1910 verließ Robert Falcon Scott auf dem Schiff “Terra Nova” London, um als erster Mensch den Südpol zu erreichen. Im Oktober 1911 starteten er und sein Team vom Basislager in der Antarktis aus den letzten Teil ihrer Expedition. Am 17. Januar 1912 erreichten sie den Südpol, nur um festzustellen, dass der Norweger Roald Amundsen und sein wesentlich besser ausgestattetes Team bereits einen Monat vorher dort angekommen waren. Auf dem Rückweg zum Basislager erforen Scott und seine vier Begleiter. Erhalten geblieben ist sein Tagebuch. Ein weiteres Zeitdokument sind die Fotografien und Filmaufnahmen von Herbert G. Ponting, der das Leben auf dem Schiff und im Lager dokumentierte. Aus den Filmaufnahmen erstellte Ponting im Jahr 1924 den Film “The Great White Silence” [GB 1924], der am 20. Juni 2011 beim British Film Institute (BFI) als “Dual Format Edition” auf Blu-ray und DVD erscheint. Geboten werden gleich zwei Fassungen: Zum einen die 106-minütige Stummfilmfassung von 1924, zum anderen Pontings 70-minütige Tonfilmfassung “90° South [aka: 90 Degrees South]” aus dem Jahr 1933. The official record of Captain Scott’s legendary expedition to the South Pole restored by the BFI and presented , with live musical performance from Simon Fisher Turner, on DVD & Blu-ray for the first time.

Im November hat das deutsche Label Pierrot Le Fou Luis Buñuels ersten beiden Filme “Ein andalusischer Hund / Un chien andalou” [F 1929, Luis Buñuel, Salvador Dalí] und “Das goldene Zeitalter / L’âge d’or” [F 1930, Luis Buñuel] innerhalb eines DVD-Sets inklusive der Dokumentation “A propósito de Buñuel” endlich in Deutschland veröffentlicht. Wer den Kauf des Sets in Erwägung zieht, sollte vielleicht doch damit warten, denn das British Film Institute (BFI) wird am 23. Mai 2011 “Das goldene Zeitalter / L’âge d’or” [F 1930] als “Dual Format Edition” auf Blu-ray veröffentlichen. Die Dokumentation über Buñuel wird enthalten sein, ebenfalls der in Zusammenarbeit mit Salvador Dalí enstandene Kurzfilm, letzterer allerdings nur auf der beiligenden DVD.
Insgesamt 32 Filme von Yasujirô Ozu wird das British Film Institute (BFI) auf Blu-ray und DVD veröffentlich. Die “Dual Format Edition”-Reihe wurde im letzten Jahr mit drei Sets und sechs darauf enthaltenen Filmen gestartet. Fortgeführt wurde sie Mitte Januar 2011 mit vier Filmen verteilt auf zwei weitere Sets. Am 23. Mai 2011 erscheinen die nächsten Filme innerhalb der Reihe.
Die “Dual Format Edition” von “Ein Herbstnachmittag / Sanma no aji / An Autumn Afternoon” [J 1962, Yasujiro Ozu] wird als Bonusfilm “Kaze no naka no mendori / A Hen in the Wind” [J 1948, Yasujirô Ozu] enthalten, diesen allerdings nur in SD auf der DVD.
Zum Set mit “Spätherbst / Akibiyori / Late Autumn” [J 1960, Yasujirô Ozu] liegen ebenfalls die Details vor. Beim Bonusfilm handelt es sich um “Haha wo kowazuya / A Mother Should Be Loved” [J 1934, Yasujirô Ozu], der allerdings auch nur auf der DVD enthalten sein wird.
Jacques Tatis “Die Ferien des Monsieur Hulot / Les vacances de Monsieur Hulot” [F 1953] wurde Ende November 2010 in Großbritannien vom British Film Institute (BFI) als “Dual Format Edition” inklusive Blu-ray und DVD veröffentlicht. Das Set enthält gleich zwei Filmfassungen: Erstmals die originale Kinofassung von 1953 und die neu restaurierte Version aus dem Jahr 1978, Jacques Tatis letzte Schnittfassung des Films, an dem er über die Jahre immer wieder Veränderungen vornahm.
Tom Burton von Technicolor hat im Jahr 2009 beim AFI DigiFest in einem Vortrag über die digitale Restaurierung informiert. Dieser Vortrag ist auf dem AFI-Youtube-Kanal zu sehen.
Am 15. November 2010 erscheinen beim British Film Institute (BFI) zwei Filme von Jacques Tati als “Dual Format Edition” mit Blu-ray und DVD.
“Die Ferien des Monsieur Hulot / Les vacances de Monsieur Hulot” [F 1953, Jacques Tati] The film that brought Jacques Tati international acclaim also launched his on-screen alter ego: the courteous, well-meaning, eternally accident prone Monsieur Hulot with whom Tati would from now on be inseparably associated. As with Jour de fête, the film is set in a sleepy French coastal resort which is seasonally disrupted by holidaymakers in energetic pursuit of fun. At the centre of the chaos is the eccentric Hulot, struggling at all times to maintain appearances, but somehow entirely divorced from his immediate surroundings. There is little plot in Tati s beautifully orchestrated ballet of comic action: it s a series of incidents, a seamless succession of gently mocking studies of human absurdity.

Das British Film Institute (BFI) hat ein ca. 10-minütiges Interview mit Tippi Hedren vom 11. Mai 2010 über die Dreharbeiten von Alfred Hitchcocks “Die Vögel / The Birds” [USA 1963] online gestellt.
Discovered by Alfred Hitchcock after starring in numerous commercials and gaining success as a model, Tippi Hedren is undeniably best known for her iconic roles in two of Hitchcock’s films – The Birds and Marnie. The legendary actor took to the BFI Southbank stage to provide candid insight into her experiences on the sets of these two masterpieces, in an in depth conversation with Adrian Wootton. Reflecting on her relationship with Hitchcock, with whom she had a multi-year personal contract, she explains the depth of knowledge she gained having been mentored by the world reknowned director, as well as giving an honest depiction of the more challenging aspects of their professional relationship.

DVD: “Secrets of Nature” [1922-1933]
Launched in 1922, this series pioneered ground-breaking techniques of slow-motion, time-lapse and microscopic photography in films exploring the wondrous worlds of animal, plant and insect life.

ABOUT THE RESTORATION
“In order for everything to stay the same, everything must change.” Although Tancredi (Alain Delon) is speaking about the future of Italian aristocracy, his description is an apt one for film restoration as well. Motion picture technology has changed radically over time, and a primary challenge of restoration is the attempt to recreate the impossible experience of seeing the film as it was originally presented. Today, powerful digital tools allow us almost unlimited freedom in image manipulation and color correction – to almost entirely erase the ravages of time and more closely represent the original artistic and technical achievements of Il Gattopardo than was previously possible using traditional photochemical techniques.
Il Gattopardo was photographed in a process called Technirama, in which images were captured on 35mm film horizontally rather than vertically. The resulting anamorphic image, twice the size of a standard 35mm frame, is remarkably sharp and full of detail. Since 1963, the camera negative has now faded, and exhibits most of the issues common to films of its era – although interestingly, because of the photographic process, scratches and dirt move horizontally across the frame rather than vertically.
For this new restoration, the original Technirama camera negatives were scanned at 8K (8000 lines of horizontal resolution), resulting in twenty-one terabytes of data. A 35mm protection interpositive was also scanned for sections needed to replace material not present in the original camera negatives. After scanning, all files were converted to 4K, and the balance of picture restoration was performed entirely digitally at this resolution. Over 12,000 hours of manual restoration was performed, removing forty-seven years’ worth of dirt, scratches, and other physical anomalies. The original monaural soundtrack has also been carefully restored, using a 35mm magnetic source which was digitally captured and processed to remove distracting pops, clicks, and noise while still faithfully representing the characteristics of the original presentation.
The restoration of Il Gattopardo is presented both in a 4K digital cinema package as well as in traditional 35mm film prints. Archival film elements and data archives have been created of both the restored and unrestored versions of the film in order to preserve Il Gattopardo for generations to come.
