To make this film, Cohl placed each drawing on an illuminated glass plate and then traced the next drawing-with variations-on top of it until he had some 700 drawings. In 1908, chalkboard caricaturists were common vaudeville attractions and the characters in the film look as though they’ve been drawn on a chalkboard, but it’s an illusion. By filming black lines on paper and then printing in negative Cohl makes his animations appear to be chalk drawings.

In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan, armed with a reel-to-reel tape deck, snuck into John Lennon’s hotel room in Toronto and convinced John to do an interview about peace. 38 years later, Jerry has produced a film about it. Using the original interview recording as the soundtrack, director Josh Raskin has woven a visual narrative which tenderly romances Lennon’s every word in a cascading flood of multipronged animation. Raskin marries the terrifyingly genius pen work of James Braithwaite with masterful digital illustration by Alex Kurina, resulting in a spell-binding vessel for Lennon’s boundless wit, and timeless message.
An dieser Stelle möchte ich den Kurzfilm “Comment est-il possible…” [BRD 2008] von Patrick Müller – im DVDuell-Forum als “Dr. Strangelove” unterwegs – vorstellen. Im Forum wurde sein zweites Filmwerk bereits diskutiert.
In 7 Minuten und 50 Sekunden rast ein Auto durch die Straßen von Paris, ausgehend vom Tunnelausgang am Porte Dauphine, über den Kreisverkehr am Arc de Triomphe, über den Champs-Elysées, durch den Louvre und an der Oper vorbei bis zum Ziel vor Sacré Coeur. Die wohl rasanteste Autofahrt der Filmgeschichte wurde im August 1976 von Claude Lelouch unter Mißachtung aller Verkehrsregeln und ohne jegliche Genehmigung auf Film gebannt. Keine 10 Minuten durfte der Film dauern, denn mehr Filmmaterial passte nicht in die Kamera, die an der Front eines Autos montiert war. Gerüchten nach soll es sich um einen Ferrari 275 GTB gehandelt haben, mit einem Formel-1-Fahrer am Steuer. Dies wurde jedoch von Lelouch im Jahr 2006 in diesem Interview widerlegt. Er selbst saß hinter dem Volant einer 6.9 Liter Mercedes S-Klasse.
Der Kurzfilm entstand im Rahmen des UCLA Animation Workshops. Auf Pixelnitrate.com ist er in einer höheren Auflösung zu sehen. Dort kann er außerdem auf die heimische Festplatte heruntergeladen werden.
