Nach der Ankündigung dreier 2-DVD “Special Edition”-Sets mit Filmen von Alfred Hitchcock in den USA hat Universal jetzt auch Details zu einem “50th Anniversary Edition”-Set von “Vertigo – Aus dem Reich der Toten / Vertigo” [USA 1958, Alfred Hitchcock] für Großbritannien bekannt gegeben. Leider scheint die Ausstattung nicht identisch mit der der US-Ausgabe zu sein, denn in der Ankündigung bei DVDTimes fehlen einige Extras. Das Cover der RC2 hingegen fällt mit dem originalen Poster-Motiv von Saul Bass bedeutend schöner aus.

Wenige Tage bevor Woody Allens “Cassandras Traum / Cassandra’s Dream” [USA / GB / F 2008] im Januar dieses Jahres in die deutschen Kinos kommen sollte, zog der Verleih Constantin den Film noch zurück. Erst nach Protesten in der deutschen Presse und anscheinend auch von Seiten der Kinobetreiber kam er am 5. Juni 2008 doch in die deutschen Lichtspielhäuser. Nun wurde die DVD laut Area-DVD für den 4. Dezember 2008 angekündigt. Wie bei Woody Allen-Filmen typisch wird es kein Bonusmaterial geben.

In Großbritannien ist er bereits heute bei Optimum Releasing erschienen. Infos zur DVD liegen bei DVDActive vor.

Die Rechte an Akira Kurosawas Meisterwerk “Rashomon – Das Lustwäldchen / Rashômon” [J 1950] scheinen in Großbritannien nicht mehr beim BFI zu liegen, sondern bei Optimum, denn letzteres Label wird ab dem 13. Oktober 2008 eine neue, als “Special Edition” titulierte DVD an den Mann oder die Frau bringen wollen. Und was bietet diese neue Edition? Laut DVDActive folgendes:

Laut amazon.co.uk wird die Masters of Cinema-DVD des Stummfilms “Geld! Geld! Geld! / L’Argent” [F 1928, Marcel L'Herbier] (siehe hier) am 24. November 2008 in den Handel gelangen. Folgende Details sind bisher aufgetaucht:

- A pristine transfer from a fine grain print struck from the original negative, featuring the director’s cut fought for by L’Herbier over many years, the film speed as projected in the late 1920s, and the entirety of each frame fully displayed
- New and improved English subtitles
- Newly improvised musical accompaniment by French composer and pianist Jean-Francois Zygel, who also provides a video introduction to the film and a documentary about accompanying silent cinema
- About L’Argent [Autour de L'Argent](1928): Jean Dréville’s 40 minute “making of” documentary
- Archival footage of star Brigitte Helm (fresh from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis) arriving in Paris for the shooting of L’Herbier’s film
- Archival screen-tests of the L’Argent actors
- Marcel L’Herbier: Poet of the Silent Art (2007): a 54 minute documentary profiling the director
- A demonstration of L’Herbier’s innovative sound techniques, which used 78rpm records during key scenes of L’Argent
- A lavish 80-page perfect-bound booklet with archival publicity stills, a long essay by noted professor of French film Richard Abel, newly translated interviews with L’Herbier, and newly translated extracts from the director’s biography.

Wie der User BradStevens im Criterion-Forum berichtet, scheint der Film “Judex” [F / I 1963, Georges Franju] auf der britischen Masters of Cinema-DVD nur in einer gekürzten Fassung vorzuliegen. Gegenüber der US-Veröffentlichung von Sinister Cinema fehlen sieben Szenen mit einer Laufzeit von ca. 2 Minuten.

1- 52m 58s. 33 seconds are missing; the end of the shot showing a man walking away from the camera; the whole of the following shot, showing the doctor walking behind a pair of children; the start of the next shot of the doctor.

2- 53m 11s. After the woman tells the childern “This isn’t a sight for you”, they walk away. In the MoC ediiton, the shot ends here; in Sinister’s tape, it continues for an additional 5 seconds with the boy turning around and shouting at the woman.

3- 53m 23s. The whole scene (46s) showing the man getting into a car and talking to the nun has been cut.

4- 54m 37s. A 35s shot has been cut; this shows two men carrying a stretcher into a room and placing a woman on it.

5- 55m 8s. Shot slightly shortened.

6- 57m 20s. A 3s shot showing a man getting out of a car is missing.

7- 58m 1s. 4s of dialogue is missing after the man says “it’s quite a walk you know”.

Masters of Cinema wird ein 2-DVD-Set von Douglas Sirks Kriegsfilm-Klassiker “Zeit zu leben und Zeit zu sterben / A Time To Love and a Time to Die” [USA 1958, Douglas Sirk] mit John Gavin und Liselotte Pulver veröffentlichen. Ursprünglich sollte die DVD innerhalb der Eureka Classics-Reihe erscheinen, wird aber nun vom Masters of Cinema-Label bearbeitet. Dadurch verschiebt sich der ehemals geplante Termin, wodurch das Set erst im März 2009 veröffentlicht werden soll.

In Deutschland ist der Film in diesem Jahr bei Caroland erschienen. Screenshots der Disc findet man hier.

In Australien ist er innerhalb der Director’s Suite-Reihe veröffentlicht worden. Gegenüber der deutschen DVD besitzt die RC4 einen Audiokommentar von Ross Gibson (Professor an der Universität Sidney) und ein “Out There in the Dark”-Interview mit Drehbuchautor Wesley Strick.

Außerdem existiert eine französische DVD von Gaumont / Columbia TriStar. Diese bietet neben dem Trailer die Featurette “Des Armes et de la Vettes” (11:57 Min. | Französisch + Englisch), ein Interview mit Douglas Sirk und Jon Halliday (14:49 Min. | Französisch), die Featurette “Assis Dans le Noir” (18:39 Min. | Englisch) und Auszüge aus einer Dokumentation über Sirk (48:48 Min. | Deutsch).

Genug Material, um eine nette Doppel-DVD zu produzieren, existiert also schon einmal.

Laut der Cinema16-WebSite war eine Veröffentlichung der vierten DVD der Kurzfilm-Reihe bereits im Frühjahr 2008 geplant. Das hat nicht ganz hingehauen, denn erst jetzt ist ein Termin der “Cinema16: World Short Films“-Disc bekannt geworden. Am 10. November 2008 soll es laut MovieMail so weit sein. Die DVD wird Untertitel in Deutsch, Englisch, Spanisch und Japanisch aufweisen können.

Quentin Tarantinos Regiedebut “Reservoir Dogs – Wilde Hunde / Reservoir Dogs” [USA 1992] wird am 20. Oktober 2008 in Großbritannien als limitierte Blu-ray- und DVD-Editionen über Lionsgate erhältlich sein. Als Verpackung wird bei beiden 2-Disc-Sets eine Tin-Box im Stil eines Benzinkanisters verwendet.

“The Satyajit Ray Collection, Vol. 1”

“Mahanagar – Die große Stadt / Mahanagar / The Big City” [IND 1963]
Set in the mid ‘50s, Ray’s often humorous story of conflicting social values in India’s lower-middle class stars Madhabi Mukherjee as a housewife whose growing independence alarms her traditionalist family.

“Charulata – Die einsame Frau / Charulata / The Loney Wife” [IND 1964]
Neglected by her ambitious journalist husband, the onely Charulata (Madhabi Mukherjee) befriends his cousin (Soumitra Chatterjee), a sensitive aspiring writer, and almost inevitably their feelings for each other begin to deepen. Adapted from a story by Rabindranath Tagore, Ray considered this sesnitively realised drama one of his finest achievements.

“Der Held / Nayak / The Hero” [IND 1966]
This beautifully observed character study was one of Ray’s earliest original screenplays. Enroute to an award ceremony, a famous and egocentric Bengali movie star finds that he is compelled to re-evaluate his life after encountering a disapproving young journalist (Sharmila Tagore).
