Das britische Label Arrow Films wird innerhalb der “Arrow Academy”-Reihe Volker Schlöndorffs “Die Blechtrommel / The Tin Drum” [BRD / F / PL / YU 1979] als Blu-ray/DVD-Combo veröffentlichen. Auf der deutschen und meines Wissens weltweit bisher einzigen Blu-ray Disc des Films ist nur der neue und längere Director’s Cut enthalten. Das britische Set wird neben dem DC in Hi-Def auch die Kinofassung in High-Definition und auf der DVD in Standard-Definition aufweisen. Einen Vergleich zwischen der Kinofassung mit dem DC gibt es bei Schnittberichte. Eine Äußerung Schlöndorffs zur längeren Version hatte ich hier veröffentlicht.

Während die deutsche Blu-ray von Kinowelt/StudioCanal mehrere Featuretten und Interviews bietet, wird das Arrow-Set einen Audiokommentar des Regisseurs enthalten. Ob es sich um einen neuen für den Director’s Cut oder eventuell um einen älteren für die Kinofassung handelt, geht aus den Angaben des Labels nicht hervor. Die Veröffentlichung erfolgt am 9. Januar 2012.

Jean Renoirs “French Can Can / French Cancan” [F / I 1954] wird am 7. November 2011 beim British Film Institute (BFI) als “Dual Format Edition” erscheinen. Eine neue digitale Restaurierung des Films wurde bereits im August 2010 beim französischen Label Gaumont auf Blu-ray veröffentlicht. Obwohl die Disc in den meisten Kritiken überaus positiv bewertet wurde, habe ich meine Probleme mit der Scheibe, da sie gerade in dunklen Bildpartien dazu neigt, im Schwarz abzusaufen.

Die beiden britischen DVD/BD-Label Arrow Films und Masters of Cinema haben durch einen Brand in einem Gebäude der Sony DADC im Londoner Stadtteil Enfield die dort vorhandenen Lagerbestände verloren. Der Brand wurde durch Randalierer bei den derzeitigen Unruhen in London ausgelöst. Zum Glück wurde bei dem Feuer niemand verletzt.

It is most unfortunate that rioting has broken out in Enfield and the Sony DADC, Enfield distribution centre was looted and set on fire. Thankfully no staff were harmed in this atrocious attack on the plant but it does mean all Arrow stock, and the stock of many other distributors is now no more. We are working with Sony DADC and our partners to find a solution for getting stock back in stores very soon. What is with existing retailers is all that will be available for the moment and new releases such as Midnight and the forthcoming ArrowDrome titles will surely be affected. We thank you for your understanding through this difficult time and will update with news of the availability of Arrow stock as it is available.

Nach der “The Vampire Lovers“-Ankündigung gleich eine weitere Hammer-Films-Veröffentlichung: Am 19. September 2011 wird Roy Ward Bakers “Das grüne Blut der Dämonen / Quatermass and the Pit” [GB 1967] bei Optimum Releasing in digital restaurierter Fassung als “Dual Format Edition” auf Blu-ray und DVD erscheinen. Hoffentlich lassen die ersten beiden Teile der “Quatermass”-Reihe nicht allzu lange auf sich warten.

Dieser Hammer-Films-Klassiker wurde in Deutschland von Anolis als zwanzigster und somit letzter Titel der “Hammer Edition”-Reihe im Jahr 2004 auf DVD veröffentlicht. Die Disc ist seit langem nicht mehr erhältlich und wird bereits zu hohen Preisen gehandelt. Als Bonus wurde außer einigen Trailern, TV-Spots, einer Bildergalerie und dem Filmprogramm nicht viel geboten. In dieser Hinsicht alleine kann die kommende britische Blu-ray schon weitaus mehr punkten.

The third in the trilogy of films based on Nigel Kneale’s seminal Quatermass series, Quatermass & the Pit was made by Hammer Studios in 1967, directed by stalwart Roy Ward Baker and starring Andrew Keir as the titular scientist, battling evil alien forces that threaten to take over the world, and also stars James Donald, Barbara Shelley and Julian Glover. Nigel Kneale’s Quatermass series has been said to have influenced everyone from John Carpenter to Dr Who.

Ein weiterer Film zum 80. Jubiläum der Ealing Studios erscheint am 5. September 2011 mit Robert Hamers wunderbarere Komödie “Adel verpflichtet / Kind Hearts and Coronets” [GB 1949], in der Alec Guinness gleich acht Rollen übernimmt. Optimum veröffentlicht den Film in einer digital restaurierten Fassung auf Blu-ray und DVD. In den USA ist der Film bei Criterion erhältlich, bisher allerdings nur auf DVD.

Perhaps the most perfect of all the Golden-Age Ealing comedies, Kind Hearts and Coronets famously featured Alec Guinness in eight different roles as the unsuspecting members of the aristocratic D’Ascoyne family – bumped off one by one by the scheming, outcast cousin of the family: Louis Mazzini. Mazzini’s mother was a D’Ascoyne by birth, but she ran away with an opera singer and was ostracized by her family as a result. When her dying wish to be buried in the family crypt is refused, Louis vows to get his revenge. As he ascends the social ranks, he is torn between his love for now-married childhood sweetheart, and equally devilish Sibella (Joan Greenwood), and the saintly wife of one of his victims, Edith D’Ascoyne (Valerie Hobson).

Dennis Price’s stunning performance as the ambitious Louis has always been somewhat overshadowed by Guinness, so sit back and admire anew the coolly detached relish with which he dispatches the eight relatives standing between himself, the Dukedom, and revenge. The film featured stunning and inventive cinematography by Douglas Slocombe, and a groundbreaking first-person narrative that, legend has it, inspired Scorsese to make use of the same device in Goodfellas.

KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on 5th September 2011.

Based on a true story. The name of the real ship, which sunk Feb 5 1941 – during WWII – was S/S Politician. Having left Liverpool two days earlier, heading for Jamaica, it sank outside Eriskay, The Outer Hebrides, Scotland, in bad weather, containing 250,000 bottles of whisky. The locals gathered as many bottles as they could, before the proper authorities arrived, and even today, bottles are found in the sand or in the sea every other year.

Bernardo Bertoluccis zweite Regiearbeit “Vor der Revolution / Prima della rivoluzione / Before the Revolution” [I 1964] wird am 22. August 2011 beim British Film Institute (BFI) als “Dual Format Edition” erscheinen. Somit wird der Film erstmals in HD vorliegen. Ausgestattet ist das BD/DVD-Set mit umfangreichen Bonusmaterialen, diese werden allerdings nur auf der DVD zu finden sein. Auf den Blu-ray Discs des BFI liegen seit Einführung der “Dual Format Editionen” nur Materialien in HD-Auflösung vor. Bomusmaterial, das nur in SD existiert, ist ausschließlich auf den DVDs zu finden.

Das britische Label Eureka hat eine Lizenzvereinbarung mit Universal getroffen. Auf Grund dessen werden demnächst einige Universal-Titel unter anderem auch innerhalb der Masters of Cinema-Reihe auf DVD und/oder Blu-ray erscheinen. Zu den ersten drei Filmen aus diesem Deal gehört “Island of Lost Souls” [USA 1932, Erle C. Kenton] mit Charles Laughton und Bela Lugosi, der bei Masters of Cinema am 24. Oktober 2011 allerdings nur auf DVD erscheint, während Criterion ihn in den USA am 25. Oktober 2011 auch auf Blu-ray bringt. Die Highlights der Ankündigung sind aber die weltweit ersten Blu-ray-Veröffentlichungen von Douglas Trumbulls “Lautlos im Weltraum / Silent Running” [USA 1972] und Orson Welles’ Film-Noir-Meisterwerk “Im Zeichen des Bösen / Touch of Evil” [USA 1958] am 14. November 2011. Drei Schnittfassungen von Welles’ Films existieren. Hier ein Text, den ich vor einiger Zeit dazu geschrieben habe:

Orson Welles drehte den Film für eine Gage von gerade einmal $125.000. Nicht gerade viel, da er nicht nur als Regisseur agierte, sondern auch noch für das Drehbuch verantwortlich war und eine der Hauptrollen spielte. Grundlage für das Drehbuch war der Roman “Badge of Evil” von Whit Masterson, den Welles zusammen mit dem nicht genannten Paul Monash adaptierte. Heraus kam ein düsterer Film Noir voller Intrigen, mit dem Welles bewies, daß es nur eines großartigen Regisseurs bedarf, um aus einer recht einfachen und banalen Story ein Meisterwerk zu machen. Zuvor gelang dies im Film Noir schon Regisseuren wie Howard Hawks mit “The Big Sleep” [1946] und Robert Aldrich in “Kiss me Deadly” [1955], später im Thriller Alfred Hitchcock mit “Psycho” [1960].

Orson Welles sollte aber auch bei diesem Film wieder kein Glück mit der Produktionsgesellschaft, in diesem Fall Universal, haben. Er verbrachte nach den Dreharbeiten im Jahr 1957 mehr als drei Monate mit dem Schnitt des Films, bevor Universal ihm auch diesen Film aus der Hand nahm.
In einer Ausgabe der “Cahiers du Cinema” aus dem Jahr 1958 sagte Welles einmal:
“I could work forever on the editing of a film. [...] I don’t know why it takes me so much time, but that has the effect of arousing the ire of the producers, who then take the film out of my hands.”

John Fords Western-Stummfilm “Das Feuerross / The Iron Horse” [USA 1924] wird am 26. September 2011 in Großbritannien bei Masters of Cinema erscheinen. Leider ist bisher keine Blu-ray des Films in Sicht, die Veröffentlichung erfolgt nur als Doppel-DVD inklusive der originalen US-Fassung und der kürzeren britischen Fassung. Bisher war der Film in Großbritannien beim British Film Institute (BFI) auf DVD erhältlich, allerdings nur in der kürzeren Version mit Virage.

In den USA ist der Film 2007 innerhalb der “Ford at Fox“-Box von 20th Century Fox erschienen. Diese DVD, die auch einzeln erschienen ist, bietet ebenfalls beide Schnittfassungen, außerdem noch einige Extras. Davon wird beim britischen Set der Audiokommentar übernommen, auf die 9-minütige “Scoring The Past: The Iron Horse Sessions with Christopher Caliendo”- Featurette, einen Restaurierungs-Vergleich und eine Fotogalerie muß man hingegen verzichten. Exklusiv kann Masters of Cinema allerdings ein 30-minütiges Video-Essay von Tag Gallagher bieten.

Laut Criterion-Forum konnte Masters of Cinema die Master von 20th Century Fox verwenden.

We do our own encodes from Fox’s masters (both versions). So they’re the same source, but they’re our DVD encodes. It’s clear that the American version of the film is the key version, but unfortunately, it’s not in very consistent shape. Parts look astonishing and would pop in 1080p, other parts are very damaged and soft. On the whole, it’s the best the film’s ever looked, but we all agree it wouldn’t be wise to put a Blu-ray out (even though both versions have been scanned in HD).

It’s going to be a very nice edition. Glad folk are liking the artwork. The Fox DVD sleeve had been heavily touched up, and it looks great, it’s just very different to the original psychedelic ‘mountain range on fire’ artwork which we have used.

Dort wird außerdem erklärt, wieso keine Blu-ray geplant ist.

Simply because “Parts look astonishing and would pop in 1080p, other parts are very damaged and soft.” — 1080p would exacerbate the damaged and soft parts, and counteract the benefits of the other parts that would work in 1080p. Another £20,000 spent on HD restoration might solve things, but Fox haven’t done the work, and we can’t afford to on a title like this (having ponied up to licence it from Fox, and factored in the sales projections).

Our release will use the same masters that Fox issued in 2007 in the USA, which in itself is a pretty big step up from the old BFI edition, which only contained the inferior European cut.

Jüngst hat der japanische Regisseur Takashi Miike zwei Remakes in die Kinos gebracht, darunter auch eine 3D-Neuverfilmung von Masaki Kobayashis Samurai-Drama “Harakiri / Seppuku” [J 1962] nach dem Roman “Ibun rônin ki” von Yasuhiko Takiguchi . Das Original wird am 26. September 2011 beim britischen Label Masters of Cinema als “Dual Format Edition” auf Blu-ray und DVD erscheinen. Als Bonus sind der Trailer und ein Auszug aus einem Interview mit Regisseur Kobayashi und Masahiro Shinoda vorgesehen. Hinzu kommt natürlich das bei Masters of Cinema obligatorische Booklet.

In den USA ist der Film seit 2005 bei Criterion erhältlich, bisher allerdings nur als DVD. Neben dem auf der MoC-Edition vorhandenen Trailer und dem Interview bietete dieses 2-Disc-Set eine Video-Einleitung von Donald Richie und Interviews mit dem Schauspieler Tatsuya Nakadai und dem Drehbuchautor Shinobu Hashimoto. Ob und wann Criterion diesen großartigen Film auch auf Blu-ray bringen wird, ist bisher nicht bekannt.

Am 1. September heißt es Abschied nehmen von einem bekannten Namen im deutschen DVD/Blu-ray-Markt. Kinowelt – seit 2008 eine 100-prozentige Tochter der französischen StudioCanal – wird in StudioCanal umbenannt. Dies trifft ebenfalls auf das britische Label Optimum Releasing zu.

KINOWELT wird zu STUDIOCANAL
Filmunternehmen übernimmt Namen des Mutterkonzerns. Markenauftritt wird einheitlich in Deutschland, Frankreich und Großbritannien. Umzug nach Berlin am 1. September.

Die KINOWELT GmbH, Leipzig, wird sich in STUDIOCANAL umbenennen. Das gab das Filmunternehmen heute bekannt. KINOWELT ist bereits seit 2008 eine 100%-ige Tochter der französischen STUDIOCANAL. Als Termin ist der 1. September geplant, zu diesem Termin findet auch der Umzug nach Berlin statt. Der einheitliche Markenauftritt gilt in der gesamten Gruppe, auch die britische Optimum Releasing übernimmt den Namen des Mutterkonzerns.

Wolfgang Braun, CEO von KINOWELT, begrüßt den Schritt: „Mit dem neuen Namen betonen wir, dass wir ein europäisches Filmstudio sind. Anfang Februar 2011 hatte ich berichtet, dass das British Film Institute (BFI) im Mai 2011 Luis Buñuels “Das goldene Zeitalter / L’âge d’or” [F 1930, Luis Buñuel] als “Dual Format Edition” veröffentlichen wird. Zu dem Zeitpunkt war geplant, dass der Kurzfilm “Ein andalusischer Hund / Un chien andalou” [F 1929, Luis Buñuel, Salvador Dalí] als Bonus auf der DVD enthalten sein soll. Mittlerweile wurden weitere Details zum Set bekannt. “Ein andalusischer Hund” wird nun auch in 1080p auf der Blu-ray inklusive zweier Scores und eines Audiokommentars enthalten sein, allerdings handelt es sich weiterhin um die Restaurierung aus dem Jahr 1960, obwohl (so weit ich weiß) eine aktuelle Restaurierung aus Spanien existiert. Der Veröffentlichungstermin hat sich um eine Woche auf den 30. Mai 2011 verschoben.

Even now, more than 80 years since it was made, this uniquely savage blend of visual poetry and social commentary remains as brilliantly witty and shocking as ever. A sinister yet poignant chronicle of a couple’s struggle to consummate their frenzied desire in the face of a stream of obstacles, in the form of bourgeois society and the Church, the film was banned and vilified for many years for its subversive eroticism and furious dissection of ‘civilised’ values.

Extras include a new HD transfer of the 1960 restoration of Un Chien Andalou, Buñuel and Dalí’s provocative debut which created a scandal at its premiere. Presented here with the restoration score, based on Buñuel’s notes, the BFI has also commissioned musicmakers Mordant Music (who re-scored an array of 70s and 80s public information films and documentary shorts produced by the Central Office of Information (COI) last year for the startling BFI DVD release MisinforMation) to create an alternative soundtrack option, which is premiered on this release.

In addition to Robert Short’s fascinating filmed introduction and audio commentaries for both L’Âge d’or and Un Chien Andalou, this comprehensive release is completed by A Propósito de Buñuel – a feature-length documentary on the life and work of Luis Buñuel, by José Luis López-Linares and Javier Rioyo.

Am 1. Juni 1910 verließ Robert Falcon Scott auf dem Schiff “Terra Nova” London, um als erster Mensch den Südpol zu erreichen. Im Oktober 1911 starteten er und sein Team vom Basislager in der Antarktis aus den letzten Teil ihrer Expedition. Am 17. Januar 1912 erreichten sie den Südpol, nur um festzustellen, dass der Norweger Roald Amundsen und sein wesentlich besser ausgestattetes Team bereits einen Monat vorher dort angekommen waren. Auf dem Rückweg zum Basislager erforen Scott und seine vier Begleiter. Erhalten geblieben ist sein Tagebuch. Ein weiteres Zeitdokument sind die Fotografien und Filmaufnahmen von Herbert G. Ponting, der das Leben auf dem Schiff und im Lager dokumentierte. Aus den Filmaufnahmen erstellte Ponting im Jahr 1924 den Film “The Great White Silence” [GB 1924], der am 20. Juni 2011 beim British Film Institute (BFI) als “Dual Format Edition” auf Blu-ray und DVD erscheint. Geboten werden gleich zwei Fassungen: Zum einen die 106-minütige Stummfilmfassung von 1924, zum anderen Pontings 70-minütige Tonfilmfassung “90° South [aka: 90 Degrees South]” aus dem Jahr 1933.

Am 18. April 2011 wird Masters of Cinema die beiden Indien-Filme “Der Tiger von Eschnapur” [BRD / F / I 1959] und “Das indische Grabmal” [BRD 1959] von Fritz Lang erstmals in Großbritannien auf DVD veröffentlichen. In Deutschland sind sie seit November 2005 in einer sehr schönen 2-DVD-Edition bei Universum Film erhältlich. Das deutsche Set bietet neben einer 20-minütigen Dokumentation und 8mm-Aufnahmen vom Set auch noch die französischen Trailer als Bonus. Fritz Lang returned to Germany on the eve of the 1960s to direct this enchanted penultimate work, a redraft of the diptych form pioneered in such silent Lang classics as Die Spinnen; Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler.; and Die Nibelungen. Although no encapsulating title was lent at the time of release to what is, effectively, a single 3-hour-plus film split in two, the work that has come to be referred to in modern times as “the Indian epic” (consisting of Der Tiger von Eschnapur and Das indische Grabmal) proved to be one of the legendary director’s most adventurous achievements. It was also one of the most popular successes Lang was to experience in his native land.

A German architect (Paul Hubschmid) is commissioned by an Indian maharaja (Walter Reyer) to construct a temple on his palatial grounds. After saving the life of a bewitching dancer (Debra Paget) on whom the maharaja has spousal designs, the pair are drawn into a hazardous maze of traps, perhaps the purest realisation of Lang’s obsession with a labyrinthine ‘house of death’ – that is, Man challenging Fate.
