Seit einiger Zeit kursiert in mehreren DVD-Foren das Gerücht, dass Criterion demnächst Charles Laughton einzige Regiearbeit, den hervorragenden “Die Nacht des Jägers / The Night of the Hunter” [USA 1955] mit Robert Mitchum, auf DVD veröffentlichen wird. Dies wurde heute durch den Criterion-Newsletter mit einem “Wacky Animal” bestätigt.

Die Buchstaben auf den Pfoten des Kaninchens sind eindeutig ein Hinweis auf den von Mitchum dargestellten Charakter Harry Powell, der die Wörter “Love” und “Hate” auf seine Finger tätowiert hat. Da die Buchstaben in der Zeichnung blau sind, kann wohl von einer Blu-ray Veröffentlichung ausgegangen werden.

Laut einer Liste von Anfang des Jahres plant Warner Bros. am 5. Oktober 2010 die Veröffentlichung der beiden Bogart-Klassiker “Die Spur des Falken / The Malteses Falcon” [USA 1941, John Huston] und “Der Schatz der Sierra Madre / The Treasure of the Sierra Madre” [USA 1948, John Huston]. Mittlerweile sind die Cover zu den Titeln aufgetaucht.

Ertsmals wird Criterion in einem Monat mehr Titel auf Blu-ray als auf DVD veröffentlichen. Das Verhältnis beträgt vier zu zwei, wobei zwei der Filme, die nun in HD erscheinen, bereits als DVD erhältlich sind: Stanley Donens “Charade” [USA 1963] und Jean-Luc Godards “Außer Atem / À bout de souffle / Breathless” [F 1960, Jean-Luc Godard]. Bei den anderen beiden Filmen handelt es sich um Nagisa Ôshimas “Furyo - Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence / Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence” [J / GB 1983] und Terrence Malicks Kriegsfilm “Der schmale Grat / The Thin Red Line” [USA 1998]. Keine großen Überraschungen, denn dass diese Titel in diesem Jahr erscheinen sollten, war bereits bekannt.

Der von Steven Spielberg produzierte und von Richard Donner inszenierte Abenteuerfilm “Die Goonies / The Goonies” [USA 1985] kam vor 25 Jahren in die Kinos. Aus diesem Anlass veröffentlicht Warner Bros. am 2. November 2010 “25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition”-DVD- und Blu-ray-Sets. Leider werden die Sets gegenüber den bereits erhältlichen DVDs und Blu-ray Discs (hier ein Screenshot-Vergleich) kein neues Bonusmaterial aufweisen. Geboten werden allerdings ein neues “Goonies”-Brettspiel, Storyboard-Bilder, eine Reproduktion eines Souvenier-Magazins von 1985 und ein Abdruck eines “Empire Magazine”-Artikels aus dem Jahr 2009 über den Film und die Crew.

This year…

Mit einer Ankündigung von Nagisa Ôshimas “Furyo - Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence / Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence” [J / GB 1983] kann also demnächst gerechnet werden. Hoffentlich wird der Film auch auf Blu-ray erscheinen. Eine DVD des Films ist am 3. Juni bei Kinowelt veröffentlicht worden.

Marcel von Frankies Filmecke hat mich auf ein Gerücht hingewiesen, dass bei The Criterion Cast aufgetaucht ist. Demnach wird das im Herbst letzten Jahres von Sony/Columbia in Aussicht gestellt “New Hollywood Box Set” eben nicht mehr bei Sony, sondern bei Criterion erscheinen. Die folgenden sieben Filme sollen enthalten sein und auch nicht einzeln angeboten werden:

• “Head” [USA 1968, Bob Rafelson]
• “Easy Rider” [USA 1969, Dennis Hopper]
• “Ein Mann sucht sich selbst / Five Easy Pieces” [USA 1970, Bob Rafelson]
• “Die letzte Vorstellung / The Last Picture Show” [USA 1971, Peter Bogdanovich]
• “Ein Zauberer an meiner Seite / A Safe Place” [USA 1971, Henry Jaglom]

Die Filme sollen auf DVD und auf Blu-ray im November 2010 erscheinen. Im Criterion-Forum gibt es bereits eine Meldung, dass dieses Set von Mike Schlesinger von Sony/Columbia bestätigt wurde. Hier Schlesingers Antwort auf eine Mail bezüglich der Veröffentlichung:

even if true, it doesn’t mean we’ve lost the rights–it merely means we sub-licensed the set to Criterion.

Zwei der Filme waren bereits bei Criterion auf LaserDisc erhältlich: “Five Easy Pieces” und “The Last Picture Show“. Letztere Disc bot unter anderem einen Audiokommentar mit Peter Bogdanovich, Cybill Shepherd, Cloris Leachman, Randy Quaid und Frank Marshall.

Die im Jahr 2001 entstandene, 10-teilige Mini-Serie “Band of Brothers - Wir waren wie Brüder / Band of Brothers” [USA 2001], produziert unter anderem von Steven Spielberg und Tom Hanks, handelt von einer Gruppe US-Soldaten im Zweiten Weltkrieg, die gegen Hitlers Deutschland in den Krieg ziehen. Am 14. März 2010 startete im amerikanischen Pay-TV-Sender HBO die ebenfalls 10-teilige Nachfolgeserie “The Pacific” [USA 2010, Jeremy Podeswa], welche nun den Pazifik-Krieg zwischen den USA und Japan als Schauplatz hat. Die deutsche TV-Ausstrahlung soll ab dem 15. Juli 2010 auf Kabel eins erfolgen. Am 2. November 2010 bereits wird die Serie in den USA von HBO auf Blu-ray und DVD veröffentlicht, wobei das Blu-ray-Set exklusives Bonusmaterial aufweisen wird.

Zum 35. Jubiläum des Milos Forman-Films “Einer flog über das Kuckucksnest / One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” [USA 1975] veröffentlicht Warner Bros. eine “35th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition” auf Blu-ray und DVD. Die Sets, welche ein 52-seitiges Buch, ein Kartenspiel, eine Reproduktionen der Presse-Mappe und Mini-Poster enthalten, werden am 14. September 2010 erscheinen.

Sei September 2002 ist der Film in den USA als “Two-Disc Special Edition”-DVD, seit Juli 2008 auf Blu-ray in einem DigiBook erhältlich. Die neuen “Ultimate Collector’ Edition”-Sets werden sich allerdings von den vorherigen DVD- und Blu-ray-Editionen unterscheiden. So bieten sie ein neues Interview mit Produzent Michael Douglas, außerdem wird die Dokumentation “Completly Cuckoo” wie damals auf der LaserDisc in der vollen Länge von 87 Minuten vorliegen. Für das “Special Edition”-DVD-Set wurde eine 47-minütige Fassung der Doku erstellt. In dieser Form war sie auch auf der bisherigen Blu-ray vorzufinden.

August 2010 erscheint die Nummer 23 der Reihe mit den ersten vier Filmen Akira Kurosawas, der in diesem Jahr 100 Jahre alt geworden wäre. Kino on Video hat die Ausstattungsdetails zu den DVD- und Blu-ray-Sets des Stummfilms “Buster Keaton - Steamboat Bill, jr. [aka: Buster Keaton: Dampfer-Willis Sohn] [aka: Wasser hat keine Balken] [aka: Stürmische Zeiten] / Steamboat Bill, Jr.” [USA 1928, Charles Reisner, Buster Keaton (uncredited)] auf der Label-WebSite veröffentlicht. Geboten werden zwei verschiedene Versionen des Films. Diesbezüglich hatte Kino International bereits ein kurzes Video mit einem Szenenvergleich veröffentlicht. Die Sets erscheinen am 6. Juli 2010 in den USA.

The last of the independent features made in the prime of Buster Keaton’s career, STEAMBOAT BILL, JR. is a large-scale follow-up to The General, substituting a Mississippi paddlewheel for the locomotive, and replacing the spectacle of the Civil War with a catastrophic hurricane. Keaton stars as William Canfield, Jr., a Boston collegian who returns to his deep-southern roots to reunite with his father, a crusty riverboat captain (Ernest Torrence) who is engaged in a bitter rivalry with a riverboat king, coincidentally, the father of Willie’s sweetheart (Marion Byron).

Keaton’s athleticism and gift for inventive visual humor are in top form, and the cyclone that devastates a town (and sends houses literally crashing down around him) is perhaps the most ambitious, awe-inspiring and hilarious slapstick sequence ever created.

In the silent era, it was common practice for filmmakers to create two separate negatives of their films, each comprised of differing takes and camera angles. This definitive Blu-ray and DVD editions contains both versions of STEAMBOAT BILL, JR. - the Buster Keaton Estate version and the Killiam Shows Archive version - each mastered from archival 35mm materials.

Durch eine Beitrag von John Hodson im Roobard’s Forum von Zetaminor.com bin ich auf den Artikel “Apaches, Nuns and a Landlord” der New York Times über aktuelle DVD-Veröffentlichungen gestoßen. Der Autor Charles Taylor verweist am Ende des Textes auf die Termine zweier kommender Veröffentlichungen von Criterion, die schon länger im Gespräch sind:

Criterion continues its season of releases on Aug. 10 with a collection of Josef von Sternberg silents, including “The Last Command” and “Underworld.”

And on Sept. 7 comes the bats-in-the-belfry Japanese horror film “House,” guaranteed to turn any day into Halloween.
