Madman veröffentlicht in Australien die britische Dokumentation “The Magnificent Tati” [GB 2009, Michael House] über den französischen Regisseur Jacques Tati am 31. August 2011 auf DVD.

Jacques Tati, France’s unique master of comedy film, was a loner and did not belong to any school except his own. He kept his distance from other directors and from ideas like the cinéma d auteur. Yet his four main features (Jour de Fête, Les vacances de M Hulot, Mon Oncle and Playtime), made with meticulous care between 1947 and 1968, were created almost entirely by him, as writer, director and star. Tati invites you to see not the comedian, but comedy itself. That explains why he’s given us the adjective tatiesque to describe the delicious absurdity of people behaving…well, as they do! Director Michael House explores the life and work of the magnificent Tati through clips and interviews with those who know his work best. Tati is followed from his origins as a mime on the Parisian music-hall stage to his Oscar-winning Mon Oncle, and the tells how Tati lost it all on his masterpiece Playtime. The film culminates with clips of contemporary artists paying tribute to the great man’s work. Featured are: Sylvian Chomet whose The Illusionist is a homage to Tati, Mike Mills, Frank Black, Professor David Bellos, Marie-France Siegler, Stéphane Goudet, Gamarjobat, Craig McCracken, Sparks, macha Make eff, Professor Martine Beugnet, mime artists Steven Wasson and Corinne Soum and Tati himself.

Anscheinend hat 20th Century Fox die Veröffentlichung von Klassikern auf DVD in den USA eingestellt, aber immerhin erscheinen ab und an einige der alten Fox-Film noch auf Blu-ray, so wie am 3. Mai 2011 der Kriegsfilm “Der Kommandeur / Twelve O’Clock High” [USA 1949, Henry King] mit Gregory Peck.

Auf der französischen WebSite filmsactu.com wurde ein Interview mit Vincent-Paul Boncour vom französischen Label Carlotta Films veröffentlicht. Darin äußert er sich auch über kommende Veröffentlichungen für den Zeitraum von September bis Dezember 2010. Darunter befinden sich auch einige Blu-ray-Ankündigungen, nachdem die letzte Blu-ray-Veröffentlichung des Labels schon über ein Jahr zurückliegt.

Rainer Werner Fassbinders “Welt am Draht / Le Monde sur le fil” [BRD 1973, Rainer Werner Fassbinder] soll am 6. Oktober 2010 als Doppel-DVD und Blu-ray erscheinen. Der Film wurde von der Fassbinder-Foundation unter der Aufsicht von Kameramann Michael Ballhaus restauriert und lief in dieser Fassung während der diesjährigen Berlinale. Auf DVD ist er bereits bei Kinowelt erhältlich, die französische Blu-ray wird jedoch die HD-Premiere darstellen.

Beim franzöischen Label Gaumont wird Jean Renoirs ”French Can Can / French Cancan” [F / I 1954] mit Jean Gabin am 17. August 2010 auf Blu-ray und DVD erscheinen. Laut der Infos auf der Label-WebSite werden beide Discs über englischsprachige Untertitel verfügen, was bei Gaumont leider nicht immer der Fall ist. Das folgende Bonusmaterial wird wahrscheinlich aber ohne Untertitel präsentiert. So war es zumindest bisher bei den mir bekannten Blu-ray Discs des Labels.

Das australische Label Madman hat für die Monate April, Mai und Juni 2010 insgesamt sechs DVDs mit Filmen des japanischen Regisseurs Kenji Mizoguchi angekündigt. Vier der Discs bieten jeweils einen exklusiven Audiokommentar. Ob die Reihe nach Juni 2010 weiter ausgebaut wird, ist bisher nicht bekannt.

“Die 47 Samurai / Genroku Chûshingura / The Loyal 47 Ronin [aka: The 47 Ronin]” [J 1941, Kenji Mizoguchi]

Japanese master Kenji Mizoguchi revisits an oft-told historical event in his visually glorious The Loyal 47 Ronin. Released just prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, Mizoguchi was strong-armed into directing the film by a government wishing to inspire loyalty among its people as Japan sank deeper into World War II.

In the Japanese feudal society of 1701, the honour code of the samurai is slowly becoming irrelevant as provincial laws, nepotism and bureaucracy replace tradition and ritual. After a dispute at court ends with the Samurai master Lord Asano sentenced to perform hara-kiri (or, ritual suicide), his samurai protegés are reduced to the state of ronin (masterless samurai). But the ronin have devised a plot to avenge their master’s honour: a final, noble act of revenge.

Von Ingmar Bergmans Filmen “Es regnet auf unsere Liebe / Det regnar på vår kärlek” [S 1946], “Schiff nach Indialand / Skepp till India land” [S 1947] und “Nahe dem Leben / Nära livet” [S 1958] sind mir bisher nur schwedische DVDs bekannt, die sogar über englische Untertitel verfügen. Seit dem 17. Februar 2010 sind sie auch in Australien unter den englischsprachigen Verleihtiteln erhältlich. Bonusmaterial wird leider nicht geboten.

“Es regnet auf unsere Liebe / Det regnar på vår kärlek / It Rains on Our Love” [S 1946, Ingmar Bergman]

Two loners meet in a train station, both of them battling on the fringes of polite Swedish society: Maggi is pregnant and unsure of what to do, while David has recently been released from prison and is faced with the difficult task of starting his life anew. United in their struggles against societal convention, the two fall in love, creating a life together in a small cabin. In spite of the numerous challenges they must face daily and their inability to trust their fellow human beings, their love for one another helps them continue to fight.

It Rains On Our Love is only the second film from master director Ingmar Bergman: a hymn to true love and one of his most optimistic early films

Beim australischen Label Madman Films steht am 17. März die Veröffentlichung dreier Filme von Jean Renoir auf DVD an. Besonders die Ausstattung von “Partie de campagne” – Renoirs unvollendetem Film – kann überzeugen. Dieser Film ist 2003 in Großbritannien vom BFI inklusive eines Audiokommentars von Philip Kemp veröffentlicht worden. Die anderen beiden Filme sind bei Criterion auf DVD erhältlich.

“Eine Landpartie / Partie de campagne” [F 1936, Jean Renoir]

Jean Renoir’s heralded masterpiece Une Partie de Campagne almost never saw the light of day. Now, Renoir’s adaptation of Guy Maupassant’s short story is recognised as one of the filmmaker’s finest creations.

On an idyllic day in the country, a family, consisting of a father, mother, their daughter Henriette and her fiance Anatole gather for a restful picnic. Against all her best judgement, Henriette finds herself succumbing to an all-too-brief romantic encounter which leaves her subtly yet undeniably changed.

In Une Partie de Campagne, Renoir creates a lyrical and bittersweet hymn to the beauty and majesty of nature.

Carlotta veröffentlicht am 3. Dezember 2009 eine dritte Box mit Filmen des Regisseurs Douglas Sirk. Im “Coffret Douglas Sirk – Partie 3“-Set sind vier Filme enthalten, die er während seiner Zeit bei der UFA – also noch unter dem Namen Detlef Sierck – gedreht hat. Zwei der Filme sind bisher nicht auf DVD erschienen. Die DVDs wurden von neu restaurierten Mastern erstellt, liegen in 1.33:1 vor und besitzen deutsche Tonspuren mit französischen Untertiteln.
