Am 22. November 2010 veröffentlicht das britische Label Masters of Cinema Fritz Langs Stummfilm “Metropolis” [D 1927] in der restaurierten und rekonstruierten Langfassung, die Anfang des Jahres in Berlin und Frankfurt/Main ihre Premiere feierte. Der Film wird auf DVD veröffentlicht, ebenso auf Blu-ray und als limitiertes DVD/Blu-ray-Combo-Set im Steelbook. Für letzteres bietet Masters of Cinema bis zum 2. 3. September ein Pre-Order-Special an: Innerhalb von 14 Tagen wird ein “Metropolis”-T-Shirt gratis verschickt und das Steelbook-Set - bestehend aus einer Blu-ray und zwei DVDs - wird im November frühzeitig ausgeliefert. Bezahlt wird per Pay-Pal, der Preis liegt bei 24,99 britischen Pfund, was ungefähr 31,- Euro entspricht.

Zu drei demnächst erscheinenden Blu-ray Discs von Masters of Cinema sind die Cover aufgetaucht. Weitere Infos, auch zu möglichen Terminen, sind leider noch nicht bekannt. Bei den Filmen “Der wilde Planet / La planète sauvage / Fantastic Planet” [F / CS 1973, René Laloux] und “Fukushû suru wa ware ni ari / Vengeance is Mine” [J 1979, Shohei Imamura] kann allerdings davon ausgegangen werden, dass die Bonusmaterialien der DVDs (die übrigens nach dem Abverkauf der restlichen Exemplare nicht wieder aufgelegt werden) übernommen werden.

Einem Tweed von Masters of Cinema nach arbeitet das britische Label derzeit an einer Blu-ray von Fritz Langs Stummfilm-Zweiteiler “Die Nibelungen” [D 1924].

Ursprünglich war die Veröffentlichung der Masters of Cinema-Blu-ray von Shohei Imamuras “Profound Desires of the Gods / Kamigami no Fukaki Yokubo” [J 1968] für Mai 2010 angedacht. Der aktuelle Termin wurde auf den 21. Juni 2010 festgelegt. Beim britischen Versandhändler Play.com sind mittlerweile die Details zur Disc veröffentlicht worden.

Die rekonstruierte und restaurierte Fassung von “Metropolis” [D 1927, Fritz Lang], die während der diesjährigen Berlinale und in Frankfurt am Main als “Metropolis 27/10” ihre Premiere feierte, soll im Herbst 2010 bei Masters of Cinema auf Blu-ray erscheinen. Im Criterion-Forum wurden die ersten Infos dazu bekannt gegeben:

MoC METROPOLIS BD will be released before Xmas. We’re coordinating with the other major licencees (Kino, MK2) etc for a simultaneous release — and it’s looking like sometime in October or November.

At this stage, our BD will be Region B.

Auf die Frage, ob das Bonusmaterial der Doppel-DVD übernommen wird:

The old extras are out of date now and the old commentary is too short. We’re not really planning on carrying any of it over.

Kon Ichikawas “Freunde bis zum letzten [aka: Die Harfe von Burma] / Biruma no tategoto / The Burmese Harp” [J 1956] soll laut Aussage von Masters of Cinema im Criterion-Forum im August 2010 auf Blu-ray erscheinen.

Allerdings scheint die Blu-ray noch nicht in trockenen Tüchern zu sein:

In den USA ist der Film im März 2007 bei Criterion auf DVD veröffentlicht worden.

Heute ist in Großbritannien Fritz Langs “M (aka: M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder)” [D 1931] bei Masters of Cinema auf Blu-ray erschienen. Für den 11. Mai 2010 hat Criterion ebenfalls eine Blu-ray angekündigt. Beide Discs werden auf dem selben Master basieren, allerdings wurde bei Criterion wohl noch einmal Hand angelegt, um einige Probleme auszumerzen. Torsten Kaiser von TLEFilms dazu im Cinefacts-Forum:

Das Criterion Master von 2003/2004 wird zwar genutzt - aber die beiden werden dennoch (auch re: Bild) nicht identisch sein. Das Criterion Master wurde im Januar nochmal überarbeitet.

Einige Einstellungen sind korrigiert worden und nun so, wie sie urprünglich waren.

Die Korrekturen haben nichts mit Cleanup zu tun, sondern primär mit dem re-timing der entsprechenden Sequenzen, die auf dem damaligen Master etwas bzw deutlich vom Original abwichen. Dies ist nun alles so, wie es sein soll.

Criterion-Forum-User peerpee von MoC zum Master:

We didn’t do any additional restoration on the HD master, other than refusing to use grain removal or other filter software in the AVC encoding stage. The HD master was pretty lovely and clean.

Masters of Cinema wird im Mai 2010 den von den Nikkatsu Studios produzierten Film “Profound Desires of the Gods / Kamigami no Fukaki Yokubo” [J 1968] von Regisseur Shohei Imamura auf Blu-ray veröffentlichen. Diese Nachricht würde über den MoC-Twitter-Account verbreitet. Eine DVD ist nicht geplant. Das Label Masters of Cinema ist eh dazu übergegangen, Filme entweder auf Blu-ray oder auf DVD zu veröffentlichen. Eine Doppelstrategie wird nicht mehr gefahren.

Das Cover zur “M (aka: M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder)” [D 1931, Fritz Lang] Blu-ray hatte Masters of Cinema bereits im Oktober über Twitter verbreitet. Wie ich schon gemeldet hatte, erscheint Friedrich Wilhelm Murnaus “Unser täglich Brot - Die Frau aus Chicago / City Girl” [USA 1930] im Februar 2010 bei Masters of Cinema auf DVD und Blu-ray. Mittlerweile hat das britische Label weitere Infos bekannt gegeben:

Tenderly romantic and tough-minded in equal measure, City Girl is one of cinema’s great pastorals, featuring some of the most delicate performances Murnau ever filmed and influencing directors such as Terrence Malick and Jean Vigo. Am 21. September 2009 erscheint Friedrich Wilhelm Murnaus “Sonnenaufgang / Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans” [USA 1927] bei Masters of Cinema auf Blu-ray. Das Label hat sechs Screenshots der Disc über diese beiden Tweets veröffentlicht. Die Screenshots stammen von der stummen Exportfassung. Diese ist zusammen mit der amerikanischen Movietone-Fassung auf der Blu-ray enthalten.

Eine kleine Änderung hat es leider auch gegeben. Das ursprünglich geplante 120-seitige Booklet wird nur noch einen Umfang von 20 Seiten haben. Die restlichen Artikel werden nur online angeboten.
