In den USA ist der Film im März 2007 bei Criterion auf DVD veröffentlicht worden.

Heute ist in Großbritannien Fritz Langs “M (aka: M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder)” [D 1931] bei Masters of Cinema auf Blu-ray erschienen. Für den 11. Mai 2010 hat Criterion ebenfalls eine Blu-ray angekündigt. Beide Discs werden auf dem selben Master basieren, allerdings wurde bei Criterion wohl noch einmal Hand angelegt, um einige Probleme auszumerzen. Torsten Kaiser von TLEFilms dazu im Cinefacts-Forum:

Das Criterion Master von 2003/2004 wird zwar genutzt - aber die beiden werden dennoch (auch re: Bild) nicht identisch sein. Das Criterion Master wurde im Januar nochmal überarbeitet.

Einige Einstellungen sind korrigiert worden und nun so, wie sie urprünglich waren.

Die Korrekturen haben nichts mit Cleanup zu tun, sondern primär mit dem re-timing der entsprechenden Sequenzen, die auf dem damaligen Master etwas bzw deutlich vom Original abwichen. Dies ist nun alles so, wie es sein soll.

We didn’t do any additional restoration on the HD master, other than refusing to use grain removal or other filter software in the AVC encoding stage. The HD master was pretty lovely and clean.

Masters of Cinema wird im Mai 2010 den von den Nikkatsu Studios produzierten Film “Profound Desires of the Gods / Kamigami no Fukaki Yokubo” [J 1968] von Regisseur Shohei Imamura auf Blu-ray veröffentlichen. Diese Nachricht würde über den MoC-Twitter-Account verbreitet. Eine DVD ist nicht geplant. Das Label Masters of Cinema ist eh dazu übergegangen, Filme entweder auf Blu-ray oder auf DVD zu veröffentlichen. Eine Doppelstrategie wird nicht mehr gefahren.

Das Cover zur “M (aka: M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder)” [D 1931, Fritz Lang] Blu-ray hatte Masters of Cinema bereits im Oktober über Twitter verbreitet. Mittlerweile stehen auch die Ausstattungsdetails zur Blu-ray und zur DVD auf der Label-WebSite online. Die beiden Discs sollen im Februar 2010 in Großbritannien in den Handel kommen.

Wie ich schon gemeldet hatte, erscheint Friedrich Wilhelm Murnaus “Unser täglich Brot - Die Frau aus Chicago / City Girl” [USA 1930] im Februar 2010 bei Masters of Cinema auf DVD und Blu-ray. Mittlerweile hat das britische Label weitere Infos bekannt gegeben:

Am 21. September 2009 erscheint Friedrich Wilhelm Murnaus “Sonnenaufgang / Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans” [USA 1927] bei Masters of Cinema auf Blu-ray. Das Label hat sechs Screenshots der Disc über diese beiden Tweets veröffentlicht. Die Screenshots stammen von der stummen Exportfassung. Diese ist zusammen mit der amerikanischen Movietone-Fassung auf der Blu-ray enthalten.

Eine kleine Änderung hat es leider auch gegeben. Das ursprünglich geplante 120-seitige Booklet wird nur noch einen Umfang von 20 Seiten haben. Die restlichen Artikel werden nur online angeboten.

Wie schon berichtet, erfolgt am 16. November 2009 die DVD- und Blu-ray-Veröffentlichung der Dokumentation “Soul Power” [USA 2008] von Jeffrey Levy-Hinte über Masters of Cinema. Die Details:

Soul Power is a vérité documentary – compiled entirely from footage shot in 1974 – of the astonishing back-to-Africa 3-day music festival “Zaire ‘74”. It was held in Kinshasa ahead of the biggest boxing event of all time: the Muhammad Ali–George Foreman “Rumble in the Jungle”. Directed by Jeffrey Levy-Hinte, editor of Leon Gast’s Oscar®-winning (Best Documentary) When We Were Kings, and sourced from the same archival pool, Soul Power features a legendary line-up of African and African-diaspora musicians – all of whom are at the very peak of their creative powers.

Criterion hat am 14. Juli 2009 den rein aus Aufnahmen der Apollo-Missionen erstellten Dokumentarfilm “For All Mankind” [USA 1989, Al Reinert] ziemlich zeitnah zum 40. Jubiläum der ersten Mondlandung (20. Juli 1969) auf Blu-ray und als DVD-Neuauflage veröffentlicht. Mit etwas zeitlichem Abstand zur Feier des historischen Moments, nämlich am 16. November 2009, wird der Film auch beim britischen Label Masters of Cinema auf DVD und Blu-ray erscheinen. Für diese Ausgaben wird das Master von Criterion verwendet, außerdem - mit einer Ausnahme - das Bonusmaterial übernommen. Das Feature “On Camera, a collection of excerpted on-screen interviews with fifteen of the Apollo astronauts” bleibt allerdings den Criterion-Discs vorbehalten.

During the Apollo lunar missions from 1968 to 1972, those onboard were given 16mm cameras and told to film anything and everything they could, in space, in orbit, and on the surface of the moon itself. Two decades later, filmmaker Al Reinert went into the NASA vaults to create this extraordinary compendium of their journeys and experiences.

Assembled from hundreds of hours of the astronauts’ own footage, with a soundtrack made up of their memories and a specially composed score by Brian Eno, the film takes the form of one journey to the moon and back again, building with elegant simplicity and exquisite construction to create an overpowering vision of human endeavour and miraculous experience.

Mit Friedrich Wilhelm Murnaus Meisterwerk “Sonnenaufgang / Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans” [USA 1927] erscheint am 21. September 2009 bei Masters of Cinema die erste Blu-ray eines Stummfilms … wenn man von dem Stummfilm im Bonusmaterial der “There Will Be Blood” [USA 2007, Paul Thomas Anderson] Blu-ray einmal absieht. Der Murnau-Film wird aber nicht nur auf Blu-ray in den Handel kommen, auch ein neues 2-DVD-Set (siehe Cover links) wird erscheinen.

Wie Masters of Cinema bereits vor einiger Zeit bei Twitter bekannt gegeben hat, werden die Blu-ray und DVD neben der bekannten amerikanischen Movietone-Fassung (Bildformat: 1.20:1) auch die europäische Export-Fassung (Bildformat: 1.33:1), die als tschechische Kopie überlebt hat, enthalten. Die Export-Fassung wurde Ende 2008 erstmals innerhalb der amerikanischen “Murnau, Borzage and Fox“-DVD-Box von 20th Century Fox veröffentlicht.

Von dem ehemals angekündigten Konzept eines Blu-ray+DVD-Combo-Sets ist Masters of Cinema nach dem Ergebnis einer Umfrage im Criterion-Forum wieder abgekommen.

This new 2009 reissue of Sunrise (for the first time anywhere in the world in 1080p HD on Blu-ray, in addition to a newly mastered 2 x DVD set) contains two versions of the film: the previously released Movietone version, and an alternate silent version of the film recently discovered in the Czech Republic. The Blu-ray edition includes both versions in 1080p HD.

The culmination of one of the greatest careers in film history, F. W. Murnau’s Sunrise blends a story of fable-like simplicity with unparalleled visual imagination and technical ingenuity. Invited to Hollywood by William Fox and given total artistic freedom on any project he wished, Murnau’s tale of the idyllic marriage of a peasant couple (George O’Brien and Janet Gaynor) threatened by a Machiavellian seductress from the city (Margaret Livingston) created a milestone of film expressionism.

Den Musik-Dokumentarfilm “Soul Power” [USA 2008, Jeffrey Levy-Hinte], dessen Filmmaterial während des “Rumble in the Jungle“-Box-WM-Kampfes zwischen Muhammad Ali und George Forman 1974 in Zaire aufgenommen wurde, hatte das britische Label Masters of Cinema vor einigen Wochen bereits über Twitter auf DVD und Blu-ray in Aussicht gestellt. Bei amazon.co.uk ist der Titel mittlerweile für eine Veröffentlichung am 16. November 2009 angekündigt worden. Die Blu-ray wird die Nummer 7, die DVD die Nummer 87 tragen.

Laut amazon wird die Blu-ray zusätzlich die DVD enthalten. Als Bonus scheinen weitere Songs und viele gelöschte Szenen geplant zu sein.
