In den nächsten drei Jahren wird das British Film Institute (BFI) 32 Filme der japanischen Regielegende Yasujiro Ozu auf Blu-ray und DVD veröffentlichen. Der Anfang wird am 19. April 2010 gemacht. Über diese ersten drei “Dual Format Edition”-Sets mit insgesamt sechs Filmen habe ich bereits berichtet.

Das British Film Institute (BFI) wird demnächst Jack Claytons Gruselklassiker “Schloß des Schreckens / The Innocents” [GB 1961] auf Blu-ray veröffentlichen. Die Terminangaben variieren zwischen 22. März und Mai 2010, wobei ich glaube, dass der März-Termin nicht mehr aktuell ist. Jetzt sind erste Details zur Disc bekannt geworden. Wie nun vom BFI praktiziert, wird es sich bei dieser Blu-ray um ein “Dual Format Edition”-Set inklusive einer DVD des Films handeln. Außerdem wird Jack Claytons Film halbstündiger Film “The Bespoke Overcoat” [GB 1956] - der auch schon auf der DVD aus dem Jahr 2006 vorliegt - enthalten sein und das sogar in 1080p. Ob auch der Audiokommentar der DVD von Christopher Frayling, der Trailer und die Bildergalerie vorliegen werden, wurde bisher noch nicht bestätigt, ist aber stark anzunehmen.

Vor einigen Monaten Zeit bereits wurde eine Blu-ray des Films “Institut Benjamenta oder Dieser Traum, den man menschliches Leben nennt / Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream People Call Human Life” [GB / J / BRD 1995] der Quay-Brüder Stephen und Timothy vom British Film Institute (BFI) in Aussicht gestellt, genannte Termine konnten allerdings nicht eingehalten werden. Nun scheint es am 17. Mai 2010 so weit zu sein. Veröffentlicht wird die Blu-ray als “Dual Format Edition” inklusive einer DVD des Films.

Inspired by the writings of the Swiss novelist Robert Walser, Institute Benjamenta is the first live-action feature from the acclaimed surrealist animators, the Quay Brothers. Jakob (Mark Rylance) enrols into the Benjamenta Institute, a dilapidated boarding school for the training of servants. He then tries to unravel the hidden mysteries of the school, his fellow pupils, and Frau and Herr Benjamenta, the siblings who run it. A fascinating symphony of light and shade constructed on the prevailing Quay themes of death, decay, and nothingness.

Über mögliche neue Blu-ray Discs aus der “Flipside”-Reihe des British Film Institutes (BFI) hatte ich die Tage schon berichtet. Allerdings scheinen nur zwei neue Titel am 17. Mai 2010 veröffentlicht zu werden, der von mir genannte “Prostitute” [GB 1980, Tony Garnett] scheint außerhalb der Reihe zu kommen.

Anscheinen veröffentlicht das BFI zukünftige Blu-ray Discs als “Dual Format Edition”, also inklusive DVD des Films. Dies ist schon bei den Yasujiro-Ozu-Discs der Fall und nun auch bei den hier vorgestellten Sets. Leider scheint sich der Preis dadurch leicht zu erhöhen.

Auf die Kontrast- und Farbprobleme während der letzten 71 Minuten auf der BFI-Blu-ray von Luchino Viscontis “Der Leopard / Il gattopardo” [I / F 1963] hatte ich nicht nur im Screenshot-Vergleich, sondern auch im Criterion Forum hingewiesen. Dort ist nun eine Stellungnahme des BFI veröffentlicht worden.

Dear Criterion Forum members and readers,

We have investigated this issue thoroughly and can now confirm there is a problem on the first pressing of the BFI’s Blu-ray edition of THE LEOPARD.

At 1:54.28 there is a significant change in black levels and contrast settings, evident from the first shot at this time code and remaining for the rest of the feature. This is demonstrated by a comparatively heavier look where blacks are crushed, whites are burnt out, the and the overall grain/noise structure becomes much more active - in short a rather abrupt and ugly gamma shift for the last 70+ minutes of the feature.

We are still investigating the source of the error with the facilities involved, but at present it seems that the fault can be traced to an error in the settings in one of the HD decks used during the final stages of this project. This has now been corrected, and the new pressing of THE LEOPARD will reflect this correction.

We appreciate the members of Criterion Forum for pointing out this issue to us. This is an error we certainly should have spotted before release, but this is a situation we’ve never encountered before, and the masters we signed off on were correct. Although we strive to be as careful as possible, occasionally human error rears its head. As Blu-ray technology develops, we find we’re learning new things all the time.

As MichaelB has mentioned, we do read the forums regularly and take your comments very seriously. We work hard to ensure every title we release is delivered at the highest possible quality, but occasionally we may miss something. If there’s a possibility that one of our releases contains a technical issue or fault, we will investigate thoroughly and work to correct it as soon as possible.

Gary Tooze von DVDBeaver steht derzeit wegen der Kontrast-Problematik der BFI-Blu-ray (siehe Screenshot-Vergleich und News) von Luchino Viscontis “Der Leopard / Il gattopardo / The Leopard” [I / F 1963] mit dem Head of Technical Production des BFI, James White, in Kontakt. Die erste Antwort von James White hat er in der DVDBeaver ListServ-Yahoo-Gruppe veröffentlicht:

The basic answer is we’re not sure yet. There’s a possibility that something went wrong with the final section of the encode, causing a slight change in how this was authored. We’re checking this with the authoring house today and I should have an update soon, but until we know for sure I’m not confirmation anything on the forums. Will let you know about this ASAP.

Bezüglich des im Screenshot-Vergleich genannten Kontrast-Problems bei der Blu-ray des Luchino Visconti-Klassikers “Der Leopard / Il gattopardo” [I / F 1963] hatte ich dem BFI gestern eine eMail geschrieben und erklärt, dass während der letzten 71 Minuten des Films die Kontrast- und Farbwerte nicht stimmen. Hier die Antwort, die ich heute erhalten habe:

Thank you for your comments regarding the BFI’s BD of ‘The Leopard’.

We have had reports of problems with this disc from people with Oppo multi-region players and I understand that Oppo are looking into this themselves.

Naturally the disc was also quality checked numerous times during which this problem was not reported.

Das Problem existiert jedoch, wie mir auch bereits in zwei DVD-Foren bestätigt wurde. Gary Tooze von DVDBeaver wurde daraufhin von einem User des Criterion-Forums darauf aufmerksam gemacht. Mittlerweile enthält sein Bildvergleich - auf den auch Frau Mullett vom BFI in der Mail verlinkt hatte - folgenden Zusatz:

NOTE: The last Blu-ray disc file (14.5 Gig - 00011.m2ts) has a predominantly darker transfer than we’ve seen from the DVDs (see our ballroom screen grab below). Rest assured - we will investigate - but it almost looks like moiring at times as the black levels are so uncharacteristically pitch.

Ich werde Frau Mullett eine weitere Mail schreiben und nochmals auf das Problem hinweisen.

In dieser Form ist die Blu-ray nicht empfehlenswert!

Am 25. Januar 2010 erweitert das British Film Institute (BFI) die “Flipside”-Reihe um die Discs #7 bis #9. Die “Flipside”-Reihe präsentiert “weird and wonderful British films in new high-quality editions on DVD and Blu-ray.”

“Privileg / Privilege” [GB 1967, Peter Watkins]

Steve Shorter, the biggest pop star of his day, is loved by millions; his approval or endorsement can guide the choices and actions of the masses. But, in reality, he is a puppet whose popularity is carefully managed by government-backed handlers keen to keep the country’s youth under control. Only an act of complete rebellion can set him free.

Mitte August hatte ich berichtet, daß das British Film Institute (BFI) eine Blu-ray des Luchino Visconti-Klassikers “Der Leopard / Il gattopardo / The Leopard” [I / F 1963] plant, der Termin jedoch vom 9. November 2009 auf den 15. Februar 2010 geändert wurde. Dies ist allerdings nur die halbe Wahrheit. Die Disc wird im regulären britischen Handel weiterhin erst im Februar 2010 erhältlich sein, seit dem 2. November ist die Blu-ray jedoch exklusiv bei HMV lieferbar.

Laut dem Blu-ray.com-Forum hat die Blu-ray den Regionalcode “B”, der italienische Ton liegt in PCM Mono vor, das Bild in 1080p. Der Audiokommentar und das Interview der bisherigen BFI-DVD wurden übernommen. Für den Film und auch die Extras sind englische Untertitel vorhanden. Dem Set liegt ein Booklet bei.

Jack Claytons “Schloß des Schreckens / The Innocents” [GB 1961] mit Deborah Kerr (in einer ihrer besten Rollen) ist neben “Bis das Blut gefriert / The Haunting” [USA 1963] von Robert Wise einer der stimmungsvollsten Gruselfilme aller Zeiten … und dank Freddie Francis hinter der Kamera einer der am schönsten fotografierten. Im Dezember 2006 veröffentlichte das British Film Institute (BFI) die bisher weltweit beste DVD des Films. Jetzt wurde über einen Eintrag bei amazon.co.uk bekannt, daß das BFI plant, den Klassiker am 9. November 2009 auch auf Blu-ray zu veröffentlichen. Infos über die Ausstattung sind noch nicht bekannt, man wird aber wohl mit dem folgenden Bonusmaterial der DVD rechnen dürfen:

Die Quay-Brüder Timothy and Stephen sind eher für ihre Animationsfilme bekannt. 1995 jedoch drehten sie mit “Institut Benjamenta oder Dieser Traum, den man menschliches Leben nennt / Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream People Call Human Life” [GB / J / BRD 1995] ihren ersten Live-Action-Film nach einer Novelle von Robert Walser. Dieser Film soll am 9. November 2009 vom British Film Institute (BFI) auf DVD und Blu-ray erscheinen.
