Seit einiger Zeit kursiert in mehreren DVD-Foren das Gerücht, dass Criterion demnächst Charles Laughton einzige Regiearbeit, den hervorragenden “Die Nacht des Jägers / The Night of the Hunter” [USA 1955] mit Robert Mitchum, auf DVD veröffentlichen wird. Dies wurde heute durch den Criterion-Newsletter mit einem “Wacky Animal” bestätigt.

Die Buchstaben auf den Pfoten des Kaninchens sind eindeutig ein Hinweis auf den von Mitchum dargestellten Charakter Harry Powell, der die Wörter “Love” und “Hate” auf seine Finger tätowiert hat. Da die Buchstaben in der Zeichnung blau sind, kann wohl von einer Blu-ray Veröffentlichung ausgegangen werden.

Ertsmals wird Criterion in einem Monat mehr Titel auf Blu-ray als auf DVD veröffentlichen. Das Verhältnis beträgt vier zu zwei, wobei zwei der Filme, die nun in HD erscheinen, bereits als DVD erhältlich sind: Stanley Donens “Charade” [USA 1963] und Jean-Luc Godards “Außer Atem / À bout de souffle / Breathless” [F 1960, Jean-Luc Godard]. Bei den anderen beiden Filmen handelt es sich um Nagisa Ôshimas “Furyo - Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence / Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence” [J / GB 1983] und Terrence Malicks Kriegsfilm “Der schmale Grat / The Thin Red Line” [USA 1998]. Keine großen Überraschungen, denn dass diese Titel in diesem Jahr erscheinen sollten, war bereits bekannt.

Criterion hat auf der Label-WebSite berichtet, dass die Blu-ray von Nicolas Roegs “Walkabout” [GB 1971] auf ein paar Blu-ray-Playern Probleme macht. Betroffen sind diese Modelle:

We are working with the pressing plant to resolve this issue as soon as possible. This year…

Mit einer Ankündigung von Nagisa Ôshimas “Furyo - Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence / Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence” [J / GB 1983] kann also demnächst gerechnet werden. Hoffentlich wird der Film auch auf Blu-ray erscheinen. Eine DVD des Films ist am 3. Juni bei Kinowelt veröffentlicht worden.

Marcel von Frankies Filmecke hat mich auf ein Gerücht hingewiesen, dass bei The Criterion Cast aufgetaucht ist. Demnach wird das im Herbst letzten Jahres von Sony/Columbia in Aussicht gestellt “New Hollywood Box Set” eben nicht mehr bei Sony, sondern bei Criterion erscheinen. Die folgenden sieben Filme sollen enthalten sein und auch nicht einzeln angeboten werden:

• “Easy Rider” [USA 1969, Dennis Hopper]
• “Ein Mann sucht sich selbst / Five Easy Pieces” [USA 1970, Bob Rafelson]

Die Filme sollen auf DVD und auf Blu-ray im November 2010 erscheinen. Im Criterion-Forum gibt es bereits eine Meldung, dass dieses Set von Mike Schlesinger von Sony/Columbia bestätigt wurde. Hier Schlesingers Antwort auf eine Mail bezüglich der Veröffentlichung:

even if true, it doesn’t mean we’ve lost the rights–it merely means we sub-licensed the set to Criterion.

Zwei der Filme waren bereits bei Criterion auf LaserDisc erhältlich: “Five Easy Pieces” und “The Last Picture Show“. Letztere Disc bot unter anderem einen Audiokommentar mit Peter Bogdanovich, Cybill Shepherd, Cloris Leachman, Randy Quaid und Frank Marshall.

Zur Mitte eines jeden Monats hin gibt Criterion neue DVD- und Blu-ray-Titel bekannt, so auch dieses Mal. Insgesamt fünf verschiedene DVD-Veröffentlichungen stehen im August 2010 an, zwei davon werden auch auf Blu-ray erhältlich sein.

Im gestrigen Newsletter hat Criterion wieder einen Hinweis auf eine kommende Veröffentlichung eingefügt. Alles deutet darauf hin, dass zum 50. Jubiläum von Jean-Luc Godards “Außer Atem / À bout de souffle / Breathless” [F 1960] dieser beim New Yorker Label auf Blu-ray erscheinen wird. Auf einer Doppel-DVD ist er bereits seit Oktober 2007 erhältlich.

Während der gerade stattfindenden Filmfestspiele in Cannes wird auch eine neue digitale Restaurierung von Luchino Viscontis “Der Leopard / Il gattopardo” [I / F 1963] präsentiert. Im Presseheft ist folgender Text über die Restaurierung zu finden:

ABOUT THE RESTORATION

“In order for everything to stay the same, everything must change.” Although Tancredi (Alain Delon) is speaking about the future of Italian aristocracy, his description is an apt one for film restoration as well. Motion picture technology has changed radically over time, and a primary challenge of restoration is the attempt to recreate the impossible experience of seeing the film as it was originally presented. Today, powerful digital tools allow us almost unlimited freedom in image manipulation and color correction - to almost entirely erase the ravages of time and more closely represent the original artistic and technical achievements of Il Gattopardo than was previously possible using traditional photochemical techniques.

Il Gattopardo was photographed in a process called Technirama, in which images were captured on 35mm film horizontally rather than vertically. The resulting anamorphic image, twice the size of a standard 35mm frame, is remarkably sharp and full of detail. Since 1963, the camera negative has now faded, and exhibits most of the issues common to films of its era - although interestingly, because of the photographic process, scratches and dirt move horizontally across the frame rather than vertically.

For this new restoration, the original Technirama camera negatives were scanned at 8K (8000 lines of horizontal resolution), resulting in twenty-one terabytes of data. A 35mm protection interpositive was also scanned for sections needed to replace material not present in the original camera negatives. After scanning, all files were converted to 4K, and the balance of picture restoration was performed entirely digitally at this resolution. Over 12,000 hours of manual restoration was performed, removing forty-seven years’ worth of dirt, scratches, and other physical anomalies. The original monaural soundtrack has also been carefully restored, using a 35mm magnetic source which was digitally captured and processed to remove distracting pops, clicks, and noise while still faithfully representing the characteristics of the original presentation.

The restoration of Il Gattopardo is presented both in a 4K digital cinema package as well as in traditional 35mm film prints. Archival film elements and data archives have been created of both the restored and unrestored versions of the film in order to preserve Il Gattopardo for generations to come.

Bei amazon.com sind fünf Criterion-Blu-ray-Discs als Pre-Order aufgetaucht, die bisher vom Studio noch nicht offiziell angekündigt wurden. Zu “Der schmale Grat / The Thin Red Line” [USA 1998, Terrence Malick] und “Antichrist” [DK / BRD / F / S / I / PL 2009, Lars von Trier] gab es bereits jeweils diesen und diesen Hinweis, eine Blu-ray-Veröffentlichung von “Die sieben Samurai / Shichinin no samurai” [J 1954, Akira Kurosawa] wurde bereits im Criterion-Blog in Aussicht gestellt. Eigentlich hätte der Film passend zu Kurosawas 100. Geburtstag schon im März 2010 erscheinen sollen, die umfangreichen Restaurierungsarbeiten verhinderten dies jedoch. Neu hingegen sind die Infos, dass auch Wes Andersons “Darjeeling Limited / The Darjeeling Limited” [USA 2007] und David Cronenbergs “Videodrome” [CDN 1983] vom New Yorker Label auf Blu-ray veröffentlicht werden. Leider gibt amazon noch keine Termine an.

Gleich zwei Filme von Michael Powell und Emeric Pressburger werden neben zwei weiteren Titeln im Juli 2010 bei Criterion auf DVD und Blu-ray erscheinen.

Im heutigen Criterion-Newsletter für April 2010 gibt es einen “Wacky Animal”-Hinweis, der wohl eine Veröffentlichung von Lars von Triers “Antichrist” [DK / BRD / F / S / I / PL 2009] in Aussicht stellt.

Criterion hat gestern auf der Label-WebSite bekannt gegeben, dass sich auf der im Juni erscheinenden “Die rote Wüste / Il deserto rosso / The Red Desert” [I / F 1964, Michelangelo Antonioni] DVD- und Blu-ray-Veröffentlichung zwei dokumentarische Kurzfilme von Michelangelo Antonioni befinden werden: “Gente del Po” [I 1947, Michelangelo Antonioni] und “N.U.” [I 1948, Michelangelo Antonioni].

We’re excited to tell you that we’ve officially added two early Michelangelo Antonioni documentary shorts, Gente del Po and N.U., to our upcoming release of Red Desert in Blu-ray and DVD editions. The films, both of which focus on the daily lives of working people, were made in the forties and are rarely shown. In Gente del Po, Antonioni takes a barge trip down the river Po; N.U. documents the lives of street cleaners in Rome. Look for Red Desert this June.

Criterion hat die DVD- und Blu-ray-Titel für Juni 2010 bekannt gegeben. Darunter befindet sich Luchino Viscontis “Der Leopard / Il gattopardo / The Leopard” [I / F 1963], der am 21. Juni 2010 in Großbritannien über das BFI in den regulären Handel gelangt, dann in einer fehlerfreien Edition. Die britische Blu-ray bietet zwar nicht solch umfangreiches Bonusmaterial wie das Set aus den USA, allerdings aber einen exklusiven Audiokommentar und ein Interview mit Claudia Cardinale.
