Anscheinend wird Terrence Malicks Kriegsfilm-Meisterwerk “Der schmale Grat / The Thin Red Line” [USA 1998] demnächst bei Criterion auf Blu-ray und DVD veröffentlicht. Den entscheidenden Hinweis gab’s im heutigen Criterion-Newsletter durch das “Wacky Animal” … einem “Thin Red Lion”. ;-)
Heute ist in Großbritannien Fritz Langs “M (aka: M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder)” [D 1931] bei Masters of Cinema auf Blu-ray erschienen. Für den 11. Mai 2010 hat Criterion ebenfalls eine Blu-ray angekündigt. Beide Discs werden auf dem selben Master basieren, allerdings wurde bei Criterion wohl noch einmal Hand angelegt, um einige Probleme auszumerzen. Torsten Kaiser von TLEFilms dazu im Cinefacts-Forum:
Das Criterion Master von 2003/2004 wird zwar genutzt - aber die beiden werden dennoch (auch re: Bild) nicht identisch sein. Das Criterion Master wurde im Januar nochmal überarbeitet.
Einige Einstellungen sind korrigiert worden und nun so, wie sie urprünglich waren.
Die Korrekturen haben nichts mit Cleanup zu tun, sondern primär mit dem re-timing der entsprechenden Sequenzen, die auf dem damaligen Master etwas bzw deutlich vom Original abwichen. Dies ist nun alles so, wie es sein soll.

We didn’t do any additional restoration on the HD master, other than refusing to use grain removal or other filter software in the AVC encoding stage. The HD master was pretty lovely and clean.

Erstmals überhaupt bietet Criterion alle Neuerscheinungen eines Monats auch in HD auf Blu-ray an. Dies liegt aber wohl vorallem daran, dass nur zwei neue Veröffentlichungen und zwei Neuauflagen erscheinen. Zu den neuen Titeln gehören John Fords Westernklassiker “Höllenfahrt nach Santa Fé [aka: Ringo] / Stagecoach” [USA 1939, John Ford] und ein zweites “by Brakhage: An Anthology“-Set. “Walkabaout” [GB 1971, Nicolas Roeg] und Fritz Langs “M (aka: M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder)” [D 1931, Fritz Lang] - der am 22. But despite our efforts to renew rights, we are losing a large group of titles from StudioCanal at the end of March, and we wanted to give you advance notice that our editions will be going out of print. Unter den Filmen befindet sich auch Max Ophüls “Lola Montez / Lola Montès” [F / BRD 1955], der in der von Marcel Ophüls neu restaurierten französischen Sprachfassung präsentiert wird. Die vom Münchner Filmmuseum rekonstruierte deutsche Premierenfassung wird leider nicht mit auf der DVD/Blu-ray enthalten sein, da Marcel Ophüls sich gegen die deutsche Fassung ausgesprochen hat. Mehr zu den verschiedenen Schnitt- und Tonfassungen hatte ich bereits im Februar geschrieben.

Das “Wacky Animal” aus dem aktuellen Criterion-Newsletter:
Eindeutig ein “Dog Star Man” [USA 1962 - 1964] und somit wohl ein Hinweis darauf, daß demnächst Filme des US-amerikanischen Avantgarde-Filmemachers Stan Brakhage bei Criterion auf Blu-ray erscheinen werden. Bereits Anfang diesen Jahres wurde von Marilyn Brakhage bestätigt, daß 29 weitere Filme von Criterion bearbeitet werden. 2003 wurde vom New Yorker Label das wunderbare 2-DVD-Set “by Brakhage: An Anthology” veröffentlicht.
Schon seit einigen Tagen werden die DVD- und Blu-ray-Sets von “Der dritte Mann / The Third Man” [GB 1949, Carol Reed] aus dem Hause Criterion auf der Label-WebSite als “Out of Print” angezeigt. In einigen Foren wurde darüber spekuliert, ob es sich nicht nur um einen Fehler handeln könnte. Leider ist dies nicht der Fall, wie auf der Facebook-Seite von Criterion zu lesen ist:

Desweiteren erscheinen der bereits vorher in Aussicht gestellte “Che“-Zweiteiler von Steven Soderbergh, die von Peter Becker bereits genannte “Roberto Rossellini’s War Trilogy“-Box und Wim Wenders’ “Paris, Texas” inklusive Bonusmaterial, welches z.B. auf der deutschen “Special Edition“-Doppel-DVD von Kinowelt nicht enthalten ist.

You’re right to call the Criterion schedule a juggling act, and juggling this year’s schedule has been more challenging than any since laserdisc days. I understand some of the frustration you’re feeling about the balance of new and classic titles, especially in the later 2009 Blu-ray schedule. Making the Criterion schedule is always a series of impossible compromises, and in the end, some people, some years, are going to end up unhappy. Clearly this was not a good year for you. I’m sorry about that. I know it may not solve anything, but I thought you might appreciate a quick look at some of the factors that came into play with this year’s schedule.
For what it’s worth, we’ve spent much more time on classic film this year than our announced schedule shows. The single most time consuming and expensive mastering project in the history of the company was Kobayashi’s THE HUMAN CONDITION — that is, until we started work on Rossellini’s War Trilogy, which is still not finished. We had originally hoped to have the Rossellini set ready for October release, then November, then December. Ironically the easiest of the masters, the 2007 restoration of ROME, OPEN CITY, is the one that is giving us the most trouble. PAISAN, which has never been available in awatchable video version, has taken us three straight months of digital restoration, an amount of time and an expense that will probably never come back, but the film will finally, for the first time, look good — still damaged, but with a beautiful black and white image that will be a revelation to anyone who has ever seen the old tapes and 16 mm prints that are still in circulation. Our tech director is about to make his third trip to Italy on this project, just to try to straighten out the last master, next week.
Criterion hat am 21. September 2009 auf der Facebook-Seite des Labels folgende Antwort auf die Frage geschrieben, ob in Zukunft jeder neue DVD-Titel auch parallel als Blu-ray erscheinen wird:
We’ll get to more Truffaut over time. As for Blu-rays, they’re really starting to catch on. We know how important the format is to the many early adopters in our audience, and we’d like to do more going forward, but because of our limited capacity, we’re always going to have to make choices. We would have loved to make the Kurosawa set available in both DVD and Blu-ray formats, but as a small, independent company, we had to be honest with ourselves and admit that we don’t have the capacity to make a worthy 25-Blu-ray set, at least not without bringing all other Criterion production, and with it our mission, to a grinding halt. Making good Blu-rays turns out to be an inordinately labor- and time-intensive undertaking, and we are already struggling to bring our Blu-ray capacity up from one or two releases a month to three or four. At this stage of the game, given the care we insist on, a good 25 Blu-ray set was just out of the question.
Üblicherweise fällt die Anzahl der Criterion-Titel im Dezember jeden Jahres gegenüber den anderen Monaten etwas geringer aus. Dies kann man in diesem Jahr nicht behaupten, denn mit dem “AK 100: 25 Films of Akira Kurosawa“-Set (mehr dazu hier) steht ab dem 8. Der Film ist in Großbritannien im Juli 2009 erschienen (hier mehr Infos, auch zu den verschiedenen Schnittfassungen) und soll am 20. Oktober 2009 in Frankreich bei Paramount auf Blu-ray veröffentlicht werden.
