Am 24. Januar 2012 erscheint Ishirô Hondas “Godzilla / Gojira” [J 1954] bei Criterion auf DVD und Blu-ray. Criterion liefert drei Gründe, sich den Film anzuschauen.

Der abschließende “Three Reasons”-Clip zur “Drei Farben / Trois couleurs / Three Colors“-Trilogie-Box, die heute bei Criterion auf Blu-ray und DVD erscheint: “Drei Farben: Rot / Trois couleurs: Rouge / Three Colors: Red” [F / CH / PL 1994, Krzysztof Kieslowski].

Seit dem 16. August 2011 ist Roman Polanskis “Wenn Katelbach kommt… / Cul-de-sac” [GB 1966] bei Criterion auf Blu-ray und DVD erhältlich. Ein Video zur Veröffentlichung aus der “Three Reasons”-Reihe des Labels.

Wie jedes Jahr im Dezember geht es bei Criterion auch 2011 etwas ruhiger zu. Nur vier neue Titel werden auf Blu-ray erscheinen, drei davon sind bereits auf DVD erhältlich. Gerade bei den beiden Seijun-Suzuki-Filmen “Tokyo Drifter – Der Mann aus Tokio [aka: Abrechnung in Tokio] / Tôkyô nagaremono” [J 1966] und ”Beruf Mörder / Koroshi no rakuin / Branded to Kill” [J 1967] ist eine Aufwertung im Bereich der Bildqualität notwendig, konnten die bisherigen DVDs – die immerhin aus dem Jahr 1999 stammen – doch eigentlich noch nie richtig überzeugen. Aus diesem Grund gibt es davon auch gleich DVD-Neuauflagen, basierend auf den neuen Mastern. Mit “Eine Dame verschwindet / The Lady Vanishes” [GB 1938] wird erst der vierte Film von Alfred Hitchcock auf Blu-ray präsentiert. Dieser liegt bei Criterion bereits als DVD-Neuauflage vor. Völlig neu innerhalb der Criterion Collection ist mit “Serenade zu dritt / Design for Living” [USA 1933] ein weiterer Film von Ernst Lubitsch.

Aus der “Three Reasons”-Reihe von Criterion: Stanley Kubricks “Die Rechnung ging nicht auf / The Killing” [USA 1956], der am 16. August 2011 auf DVD und Blu-ray erschienen ist.

Steigt demnächst “Godzilla / Gojira” [J 1954, Ishirô Honda] auf einer Criterion-Blu-ray/DVD aus den Fluten vor der japanischen Küste? Der heute veröffentlichte Hinweis des US-Labels weist darauf hin, denn auf der Filmdose steht eindeutig “Godzilla” in japanischen Schriftzeichen.

Der US-amerikanische Filmkritiker Leonard Maltin berichtet im Jahr 1985 über die ersten LaserDisc-Titel des 1984 gegründeten Labels Criterion. Die Info “King Kong on disc was recorded from the original film negative from the Library of Congress” ist allerdings nicht korrekt, wenn mit “original film negative” das Kamera-Negativ gemeint war. Dieses wurde vor langer Zeit bereits zerstört und existierte somit auch 1985 nicht mehr. Das Master wurde damals allerdings von Negativ-Materialien der Library of Congress erstellt.

Am 21. Juni 2011 veröffentlicht Criterion den Film-Noir-Klassiker “Rattennest / Kiss Me Deadly” [USA 1955, Robert Aldrich] auf DVD und Blu-ray. Die New Yorker nennen drei Gründe, den Film in die Sammlung aufzunehmen.

Im August 2011 bringt Criterion wieder eine Reihe erstklassiger Filme auf den Markt. Meiner Meinung nach der bisher interessanteste Monat des New Yorker Labels in diesem Jahr.
Der zuvor nur in der “The Orphic Trilogy” erhältliche “Orpheus” von Jean Cocteau wird erstmals auf Blu-ray erscheinen, außerdem kommt eine 2-DVD-Neuauflage. Gillo Pontecorvos hervorragender “The Battle of Algiers” erscheint endlich auf Blu-ray. Das erstklassige Bonusmaterial des 3-DVD-Sets (eine der besten Criterion-Veröffentlichungen überhaupt) wird natürlich übernommen. In Deutschland erscheint er übrigens demnächst bei Pierrot le Fou, allerdings nur auf DVD und mit wenigen Extras. Auch Lindsay Andersons “If…” mit Malcolm McDowell wird in HD zugänglich gemacht. Neu in die Criterion Collection aufgenommen werden Roman Polanskis “Cul-de-Sac“, Lee Chang-dongs “Secret Sunshine” und endlich Stanley Kubricks “The Killing“. Letztere Edition bietet auch gleich noch Kubricks “Killer’s Kiss” mit einem restaurierten Transfer (und hoffentlich ebenfalls in HD). Das Highlight des Monats allerdings ist meiner Meinung die “The Complete Jean Vigo“-Edition mit den vier Filmen des 1934 mit gerade einmal 29 Jahren viel zu früh an einer Tuberkulose-Erkrankung verstorbenen französischen Regisseurs. Bisher waren alle Filme zusammen in Frankreich (jedoch ohne englische Untertitel) und in Großbritannien auf DVD erhältlich. Criterion bringt diese Filme nun erstmals auch in HD.
