Am 24. Januar 2012 erscheint Ishirô Hondas “Godzilla / Gojira” [J 1954] bei Criterion auf DVD und Blu-ray. Criterion liefert drei Gründe, sich den Film anzuschauen.

Der abschließende “Three Reasons”-Clip zur “Drei Farben / Trois couleurs / Three Colors“-Trilogie-Box, die heute bei Criterion auf Blu-ray und DVD erscheint: “Drei Farben: Rot / Trois couleurs: Rouge / Three Colors: Red” [F / CH / PL 1994, Krzysztof Kieslowski].

Kino Lorber veröffentlicht innerhalb der “Kino Classics”-Reihe zwei Filme des US-amerikanischen Regisseurs D.W. Griffith, darunter auch seinen berühmten und technisch wegweisenden, wegen seiner rassistischen Darstellungen aber auch berüchtigten Stummfilm “Die Geburt einer Nation / The Birth of a Nation” [USA 1915], der als 3-Disc-Sets auf Blu-ray und DVD erscheinen wird. Bei dem anderen Film handelt es sich um seinen Stummfilm “Weit im Osten [aka: Mädchenlos] / Way Down East” [USA 1920], der nur auf Blu-ray erscheint. Beide Sets kommen am 22. November 2011 in den Handel.

Seit dem 16. August 2011 ist Roman Polanskis “Wenn Katelbach kommt… / Cul-de-sac” [GB 1966] bei Criterion auf Blu-ray und DVD erhältlich. Ein Video zur Veröffentlichung aus der “Three Reasons”-Reihe des Labels.

Bereits als 15-jähriger Teenager durfte J.J. Abrams die Super8-Kurzfilme von Steven Spielberg restaurieren. 30 Jahre später erreichte die Zusammenarbeit der beiden größere Dimensionen und nur noch der Name und nicht mehr das Filmformat an sich durfte für einen der besten Blockbuster des Jahres herhalten: “Super 8” [USA 2011, J.J. Abrams]. Am 22. November 2011 wird der Film in den USA auf Blu-ray und DVD erscheinen.

Wie jedes Jahr im Dezember geht es bei Criterion auch 2011 etwas ruhiger zu. Nur vier neue Titel werden auf Blu-ray erscheinen, drei davon sind bereits auf DVD erhältlich. Gerade bei den beiden Seijun-Suzuki-Filmen “Tokyo Drifter – Der Mann aus Tokio [aka: Abrechnung in Tokio] / Tôkyô nagaremono” [J 1966] und ”Beruf Mörder / Koroshi no rakuin / Branded to Kill” [J 1967] ist eine Aufwertung im Bereich der Bildqualität notwendig, konnten die bisherigen DVDs – die immerhin aus dem Jahr 1999 stammen – doch eigentlich noch nie richtig überzeugen. Aus diesem Grund gibt es davon auch gleich DVD-Neuauflagen, basierend auf den neuen Mastern. Mit “Eine Dame verschwindet / The Lady Vanishes” [GB 1938] wird erst der vierte Film von Alfred Hitchcock auf Blu-ray präsentiert. Dieser liegt bei Criterion bereits als DVD-Neuauflage vor. Völlig neu innerhalb der Criterion Collection ist mit “Serenade zu dritt / Design for Living” [USA 1933] ein weiterer Film von Ernst Lubitsch.

Bei einer Veranstaltung zum 30. Jubiläum des ersten Indiana-Jones-Films “Jäger des verlorenen Schatzes / Raiders of the Lost Ark” [USA 1981, Steven Spielberg] hat sich Steven Spielberg zu den kommenden Blu-ray Discs von “E.T. – Der Außerirdische / E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial” [USA 1982] und der ersten drei “Indiana Jones“-Filme geäußert. Nach einer kurzen Befragung des anwesenden Publikums und dessen “Nein” zur “20th Anniversary Edition”-Fassung von “E.T.” wird auf Blu-ray wohl nur die originale Kinofassung von 1982 erscheinen. Auch Indy wird demnächst veröffentlicht und wie TheDigitalBits in Erfahrung gebracht hat, soll es in der zweiten Hälfte des nächsten Jahres so weit sein.

Midnight Reviews aus Montreal hat ein Unboxing-Video des amerikanischen “Krieg der Sterne / Star Wars“-Blu-ray-Sets online gestellt. Am 1. September hatte ich bereits berichtet, dass Buena Vista / Disney am 13. Dezember 2011 die Comic-Verfilmung “Rocketeer / The Rocketeer” [USA 1991] von Joe Johnston auf Blu-ray veröffentlichen wird. Mittlerweile ist dazu eine Pressemitteilung erschienen. Leider wird die “20th Anniversary Edition” keinerlei Bonusmaterialien bieten.

Twilight Time, die vor kurzem mit dem von 20th Century Fox lizensierten “Sinuhe, der Ägypter / The Egyptian” [USA 1954, Michael Curtiz] ihre erste Blu-ray Discs auf den Markt gebracht haben, konnten nun eine Lizensierungsvereinbarung mit Sony bekannt geben. Damit ist es dem US-Label möglich, Titel aus der Produktion von Columbia auf Blu-ray Discs mit einer Limitierung von 3.000 Stück über die WebSite Screen Archives zu vertreiben. Am 8. November 2011 erfolgt die Veröffentlichung von “Die geheimnisvolle Insel / Mysterious Island” [GB / USA 1961, Cy Endfield], am 13. Dezember 2011 soll “Die rabenschwarze Nacht / Fright Night” [USA 1985, Tom Holland] folgen. Wenn möglich, wird Twilight Time neben anderen Extras den Blu-ray Discs eine isolierte Musik-Tonspur spendieren.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (September 1, 2011) — Specialty label TWILIGHT TIME has struck a deal with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to license and release classic films from the Sony-owned Columbia Pictures library in high-definition Blu-ray editions. In line with TWILIGHT TIME’s innovative limited series concept, just 3000 units of each title will be produced, aimed at the collector/classic film aficionado market, and available exclusively online through www.screenarchives.com, the nation’s largest independent distributor of specialty soundtracks.

Im Jahr 1952 begann der Siegeszug der Widescreen-Filme und des Mehrkanal-Kinotons mit dem Cinerama-Verfahren und dem Film “Das ist Cinerama / This is Cinerama” [USA 1952, Merian C. Cooper, Gunther von Fritsch, Ernest B. Schoedsack (uncredited), Michael Todd Jr. (uncredited)]. Nur noch sieben weitere Filme sollten bis 1962 in dem kostspieligen und wegen seiner Technik aufwendigen Verfahren gedreht werden. Zwei der insgesamt acht Filme waren Spielfilme (“Das war der wilde Westen / How the West Was Won” [USA 1962, John Ford, Henry Hathaway, George Marschall, Richard Thorpe (uncredited)] ist seit 2008 als hervorragende Blu-ray-Edition bei Warner Bros. erhältlich), bei den restlichen sechs handelte es sich um sogenannte Travelouges (oder Reisefilme). Diese sechs Filme werden derzeit digital restauriert um für digitale Kinoprojektionen im Smilebox-Verfahren verfügbar zu sein, spätere DVD- und Blu-ray-Veröffentlichungen sind geplant.
