Die beiden britischen DVD/BD-Label Arrow Films und Masters of Cinema haben durch einen Brand in einem Gebäude der Sony DADC im Londoner Stadtteil Enfield die dort vorhandenen Lagerbestände verloren. Der Brand wurde durch Randalierer bei den derzeitigen Unruhen in London ausgelöst. Zum Glück wurde bei dem Feuer niemand verletzt.
It is most unfortunate that rioting has broken out in Enfield and the Sony DADC, Enfield distribution centre was looted and set on fire. Thankfully no staff were harmed in this atrocious attack on the plant but it does mean all Arrow stock, and the stock of many other distributors is now no more. We are working with Sony DADC and our partners to find a solution for getting stock back in stores very soon. What is with existing retailers is all that will be available for the moment and new releases such as Midnight and the forthcoming ArrowDrome titles will surely be affected. We thank you for your understanding through this difficult time and will update with news of the availability of Arrow stock as it is available.
However! The best place to still purchase our titles is Amazon or Eureka direct, who both still have plenty of stock
Nick Wrigley von Masters of Cinema hat sich dazu auch im Criterion-Forum geäußert:
We don’t think this is going to be a massive problem. A few titles may be not available for a few weeks, but everything will be back in print as soon as possible!
One upshot of this, is that we’ll be fast-tracking new Dual Format editions of most of our Blu-ray only releases.
Bei der diesjährigen ComicCon in San Diego fand unter der Leitung von Bill Hunt (TheDigitalBits) eine Diskussion unter dem Titel “Golden Age of Blu-ray?” statt. Mit daran teilgenommen haben Todd Doogan (TheDigitalBits), Adam Jahnke (TheDigitalBits), die DVD/BD-Produzenten Charles de Lauzirika und Cliff Stephenson sowie George Feltenstein (Warner Bros. Home Entertainment). Gamespot hat die Veranstaltung aufgezeichnet.
Das Fangoria Magazine berichtet, dass Synpse Films die Rechte an einem weiteren Film der legendären Hammer Films Production erworben hat. “Comtesse des Grauens / Countess Dracula” [GB 1971, Peter Sasdy] soll demnach im nächsten Jahr auf DVD und Blu-ray erscheinen, das HD-Master von MGM liegt dem Label schon vor. Die bereits 2010 angekündigten “Draculas Hexenjagd / Twins of Evil” [GB 1971, John Hough] und “Hände voller Blut / Hands of the Ripper” [GB 1971, Peter Sasdy] sollen im November 2011 bzw. Mitte nächsten Jahres auf den Markt kommen.
Trailer zur Dokumentation “The People vs. George Lucas” [USA / GB 2010, Alexandre O. Philippe] hatte ich hier bereits im im März 2009 und Februar 2010 präsentiert. Capelight wird den Film am 16. September 2011 auf Blu-ray und DVD veröffentlichen. Angekündigt wurde die Disc heute bei Facebook:

Am Freitag erscheint die “Superman Spielfilm Collection” von Warner Bros. in Deutschland exklusiv bei amazon.de auf acht Blu-ray Discs. Auf dem Blu-ray Filme Blog wurde ein Video über das Verpackungs-Design online gestellt.
Jack Claytons Gruselfilm-Meisterwerk “Schloß des Schreckens / The Innocents” [GB 1961] wurde 2006 vom deutschen Label Capelight auf DVD veröffentlicht. Mittlerweile ist die Disc Out-of-Print und nur noch zu erhöhten Preisen zu bekommen. Im November 2011 wird es jedoch eine Neuauflage von Capelight geben, gleichzeitig erscheint der Film erstmals in Deutschland auf Blu-ray. Capelight dazu auf Facebook:
SCHLOSS DES SCHRECKENS (The Innocents): Nachdem der Titel nun schon einige Zeit out of print ist, konnten wir die Lizenz nun erneuern. Termin für die DVD-Neuauflage und die Blu-ray Erstveröffentlichung: November 2011.
In Großbritannien ist der Film bereits beim British Film Institute (BFI)auf Blu-ray erhältlich und bietet gegenüber der deutschen DVD-Erstauflage umfangreicheres und interessanteres Bonusmaterial. Allerdings muß ich sagen, dass der Qualitätsgewinn der BFI-BD gegenüber der deutschen DVD nicht nennenswert ausgefallen ist.
Nach der “The Vampire Lovers“-Ankündigung gleich eine weitere Hammer-Films-Veröffentlichung: Am 19. September 2011 wird Roy Ward Bakers “Das grüne Blut der Dämonen / Quatermass and the Pit” [GB 1967] bei Optimum Releasing in digital restaurierter Fassung als “Dual Format Edition” auf Blu-ray und DVD erscheinen. Hoffentlich lassen die ersten beiden Teile der “Quatermass”-Reihe nicht allzu lange auf sich warten.
Dieser Hammer-Films-Klassiker wurde in Deutschland von Anolis als zwanzigster und somit letzter Titel der “Hammer Edition”-Reihe im Jahr 2004 auf DVD veröffentlicht. Die Disc ist seit langem nicht mehr erhältlich und wird bereits zu hohen Preisen gehandelt. Als Bonus wurde außer einigen Trailern, TV-Spots, einer Bildergalerie und dem Filmprogramm nicht viel geboten. In dieser Hinsicht alleine kann die kommende britische Blu-ray schon weitaus mehr punkten.

Der Horrorfilm “Gruft der Vampire / The Vampire Lovers” [GB 1970] der Hammer-Films mit Peter Cushing wird am 31. August 2011 in Australien bei MGM im Vertrieb von Shock Entertainment weltweit erstmalig auf Blu-ray erscheinen.
In Deutschland ist der Film bei Koch Media als #5 der “Hammer Edition” auf DVD erschienen. Diese Disc bietet einen Audiokommentar von Darstellerin Ingrid Pitt, Regisseur Roy Ward Baker und Drehbuchautor Tudor Gates, eine “Camille”-Lesung von Ingrid Pitt, Radio-Spots, den Trailer und eine Bildergalerie. Mit Ausnahme der Radio-Spots und der Bildergalerie wird dieses Bonusmaterial auch auf der australischen Blu-ray zu finden sein.

Ein weiterer Film zum 80. Jubiläum der Ealing Studios erscheint am 5. September 2011 mit Robert Hamers wunderbarere Komödie “Adel verpflichtet / Kind Hearts and Coronets” [GB 1949], in der Alec Guinness gleich acht Rollen übernimmt. Optimum veröffentlicht den Film in einer digital restaurierten Fassung auf Blu-ray und DVD. In den USA ist der Film bei Criterion erhältlich, bisher allerdings nur auf DVD.

Perhaps the most perfect of all the Golden-Age Ealing comedies, Kind Hearts and Coronets famously featured Alec Guinness in eight different roles as the unsuspecting members of the aristocratic D’Ascoyne family – bumped off one by one by the scheming, outcast cousin of the family: Louis Mazzini. Mazzini’s mother was a D’Ascoyne by birth, but she ran away with an opera singer and was ostracized by her family as a result. When her dying wish to be buried in the family crypt is refused, Louis vows to get his revenge. As he ascends the social ranks, he is torn between his love for now-married childhood sweetheart, and equally devilish Sibella (Joan Greenwood), and the saintly wife of one of his victims, Edith D’Ascoyne (Valerie Hobson).
Dennis Price’s stunning performance as the ambitious Louis has always been somewhat overshadowed by Guinness, so sit back and admire anew the coolly detached relish with which he dispatches the eight relatives standing between himself, the Dukedom, and revenge. The film featured stunning and inventive cinematography by Douglas Slocombe, and a groundbreaking first-person narrative that, legend has it, inspired Scorsese to make use of the same device in Goodfellas.

Based on a true story. The name of the real ship, which sunk Feb 5 1941 – during WWII – was S/S Politician. Having left Liverpool two days earlier, heading for Jamaica, it sank outside Eriskay, The Outer Hebrides, Scotland, in bad weather, containing 250,000 bottles of whisky. The locals gathered as many bottles as they could, before the proper authorities arrived, and even today, bottles are found in the sand or in the sea every other year.

Kino on Video / Kino Lorber veröffentlicht am 16. August 2011 Jim McBrides “David Holzmans Tagebuch / David Holzman’s Diary” [USA 1967] in den USA auf DVD und Blu-ray in einer digital restaurierten Fassung. Der Film, eine Mockumentary über das Drehen einer Dokumentation, wurde laut dem Internationalen Filmlexikon in nur fünf Tagen mit einem Budget von 2.500 US-Dollar gedreht.
Über eine bisherige DVD-Auswertung in den USA ist mir nichts bekannt. Auf LaserDisc war der Film innerhalb der Criterion Collection erhältlich. Hier der Link zum dazugehörigen Essay von Jaime Wolf. In Großbritannien ist “David Holzman’s Diary” seit 2006 bei Second Run auf DVD erhältlich. Für das Booklet dieser Veröffentlichung schrieb Jonathan Rosenbaum ein Essay. Den komplette Text hat der Autor auf JonathanRosenbaum.com online gestellt. Ein aktuelles Interview mit Regisseur Jim McBride hat Brecht Andersch auf Fandor am 14. Juni 2011 veröffentlicht. Einen Tag später erschien dort auch ein Interview mit L.M. “Kit” Carson, der den David im Film spielte.
Ebenfalls auf Fandor zu finden ist das zweiteilige Video-Essay “A Diary on David Holzman” von Kevin B. Lee (Teil 1 | Teil 2).
Warner Archive hat heute Nacht per Twitter von der “The Golden Age of Blu-ray”-Diskussion der ComicCon 2011 berichtet. Bei dieser Veranstaltung war auch George Feltenstein (SVP Catalog Marketing bei Warner Bros.) anwesend. Diesem Tweet nach kann man 2013 mit 3D-Blu-ray Discs von Alfred Hitchcocks einzigem 3D-Film “Bei Anruf Mord / Dial M for Murder” [USA 1954] und von “Das Kabinett des Professor Bondi / House of Wax” [USA 1953, André De Toth] rechnen.

Wenn die Angaben vom kanadischen Amazon stimmen, erscheint am 6. September 2011 eine “40th Anniversary Edition” von Sam Peckinpahs “Wer Gewalt sät / Straw Dogs” [GB / USA 1971] bei MGM auf Blu-ray. Weitere Details liegen leider noch nicht vor. In Großbritannien hatte das Label Fremantle vor einiger Zeit bereits eine Blu-ray angekündigt, diese wurde aber andauernd verschoben und ist bis heute nicht erhältlich.
Bernardo Bertoluccis zweite Regiearbeit “Vor der Revolution / Prima della rivoluzione / Before the Revolution” [I 1964] wird am 22. August 2011 beim British Film Institute (BFI) als “Dual Format Edition” erscheinen. Somit wird der Film erstmals in HD vorliegen. Ausgestattet ist das BD/DVD-Set mit umfangreichen Bonusmaterialen, diese werden allerdings nur auf der DVD zu finden sein. Auf den Blu-ray Discs des BFI liegen seit Einführung der “Dual Format Editionen” nur Materialien in HD-Auflösung vor. Bomusmaterial, das nur in SD existiert, ist ausschließlich auf den DVDs zu finden.

Juni 2011 der Rue Morgue Radio Show wird berichtet, dass Michael Felsher von Red Shirt Pictures derzeit an einer Dokumentation über “Tanz der Teufel 2 – Jetzt wird noch mehr getanzt / Evil Dead 2” [USA 1987, Sam Raimi] arbeitet (Download der Sendung | Michael Felsher ab Laufzeit 10:58 Min. | der Hinweis auf die Doku ab 19:01 Min.). Geplant ist die Veröffentlichung im nächsten Jahr auf einer “25th Anniversary Edition”-Blu-ray des Films. Red Shirt Pictures hat bereits Extras für etliche Horror-DVDs/BDs erstellt. Auf deren Facebook-Seite sind auch Fotos von Bruce Campbell, Special-FX-Artist Jim Belohovek, Special-FX-Artist Doug Beswick und Special-Make-Up-FX-Creator Mark Shostrom zu finden.
