No director has shown his reverence for the auteur masters more openly than Peter Bogdanovich, who studied his craft with Orson Welles and John Ford, recording their conversations for posterity. An American contemporary of the French New Wave, Bogdanovich came to Criterion with a Wellesian mission: to restore his masterpiece to full length.

This coming-of-age story, set in small-town Texas during the early 1950s, features outstanding performances by Cybill Shepherd, Randy Quaid, and Cloris Leachman (who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress). Both editions offer audio commentary by director Bogdanovich and the film's stars.
