No detail is too small for the attention of this perfectionist auteur, so when Criterion contacted him about his Polish classic, Knife in the Water, Polanski insisted on retranslating the subtitles himself. For his second Director Approved disc, he pulled out all the stops, recording commentary, video interviews, even including his earliest surrealist shorts.

The story is deceptively simple: A married couple pick up a young student hitchhiker and invite him to spend the weekend on their yacht. But soon the sexual and emotional tension begins to mount alarmingly in director Roman Polanski's remarkably accomplished first feature. Winner of the Critics' Prize at the 1962 Venice Film Festival, Knife in the Water established Polanski as a major international filmmaker. Polish with English subtitles.
