Mit “Meuterei auf der Bounty / Mutiny on the Bounty” [USA 1962] von Regisseur Lewis Milestone kam 1962 die erste Filmproduktion in die Kinos, die mit dem “Ultra Panavision 70″-Verfahren beworben wurde. Dabei handelte es sich um ein anamorphotisches 65/70mm-Verfahren, das erstmals 1957 beim Film “Das Land des Regenbaums / Raintree County” [USA 1957, Edward Dmytryk] und zwei Jahre später auch bei William Wylers “Ben Hur / Ben-Hur” [USA 1959] zum Einsatz kam, allerdings trug es bei diesen beiden Filmen noch den Namen “MGM Camera 65″. “Raintree County” wurde auf 65mm-Negativ gedreht, kam jedoch nur mit 35mm-Reduction-Prints und einem Format von 2.35:1 in die Kinos. Mit einem Bildformat von 2.76:1 war “Ultra Panavision 70 / MGM Camera 65” das breiteste Widescreen-Format überhaupt, wobei es Diskussionen darüber gibt, ob die Filme damals überhaupt in der kompletten Breite oder eher leicht an den Seiten maskiert vorgeführt wurden. In Bezug auf Stanley Kramers “Ultra Panavision”-Produktion “Eine total, total verrückte Welt / It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” [USA 1963] bemerkte Robert A. Harris jedoch im HomeTheaterForum, dass alles ab einem Format von 2.55:1 bei diesen Produktionen in Ordnung geht.

In den USA wurde “Meuterei auf der Bounty / Mutiny on the Bounty” 2006 auf DVD und auch auf HD-DVD veröffentlicht. In Deutschland erfolgte die Veröffentlichung ebenfalls 2006, allerdings nur auf DVD. Die SD- und HD-Discs bieten das originale Bildformat von 2.76:1, auch wenn auf dem Cover der deutschen DVD ein Format von 2.40:1 genannt wird. Laut Robert A. Harris wurde das Master jedoch nicht direkt von 65mm-Elementen erstellt, sondern von einem Reduction-35mm-Interpositiv.

In der Pressemitteilung zur Blu-ray – die am 8. November 2011 in den US-amerikanischen Handel kommt – ist auch nur von “restored elements from the original 65mm negative” die Rede. Somit kann davon ausgegangen werden, dass wohl das bereits vorhandene Master Verwendung findet. Einen neuen 65mm-Scan und eine neue Restaurierung hätte Warner ganz bestimmt werbewirksam genannt. Auch im Bereich des Bonusmaterials gibt es nichts neues zu berichten. Die Extras der 2006er-Discs werden übernommen, weiteres Material gibt es nicht.

Informationen zu einer Veröffentlichung der Blu-ray in Deutschland gibt es leider noch nicht. Da es bei Warner Bros. allerdings üblich ist, weltweit identische Discs der Katalogtitel zu veröffentlichen, kann man davon ausgehen, dass die amerikanische Blu-ray über eine deutsche Tonspur verfügen wird.
