Im vorherigen Artikel habe ich noch auf einen BBFC-Eintrag bezüglich der britischen “African Queen / The African Queen” [USA / GB 1951, John Huston] DVD- und Blu-ray-Sets verwiesen, jetzt bin ich beim britischen Mailorder HMV.com auf die kompletten Details zur Bonusausstattung gestoßen. Neben der bei der BBFC geprüften Dokumentation “Embracing Chaos – Making The African Queen” – die auch schon auf den US-Sets von Paramount zu finden ist – wird ITV den Audiokommentar des Kameramanns Jack Cardiff von der vorherigen DVD auch auf der DVD-Neuauflage und der Blu-ray veröffentlichen.
The award winning tale of romance and adventure, adapted from a novel by C.S. Forester and featuring screen legends Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart is widely seen as a cinematic classic. Bogart’s role as the hard-drinking river trader won him an Oscar, with Hepburn putting in a wonderfully astute performance as the prim missionary who must accompany Bogart in his boat, the ‘African Queen’ during World War I. The two are forced to travel down a hazardous river together, learning about each other along the way. Both John Huston’s masterful direction and the onscreen chemistry between Hepburn and Bogart, makes this a rare treat indeed.
The film’s restoration in 2010:
ITV STUDIOS Global Entertainment has partnered with Paramount Pictures to save this great classic and restore it back to its former glory. The Original 35mm three strip camera negatives were scanned at high resolution and digitally recombined using restoration tools to repair tears and scratches, remove dirt and stabilize the picture. The sound track underwent full digital audio restoration removing clicks, hum, and other audio defects before creating a new Optical soundtrack negative. The Digital files have been output to a high resolution digital cinema File as well as creating a pristine new combined 35mm negative and an HD master.

Schade, den Audiokommentar hätte ich natürlich schon gerne gehabt. Eine Commemorative Edition wird es im UK aber nicht geben, oder?

Nein, eine britische “Commemorative Edition” wird es wohl nicht geben. Bei den Versandhändlern sind nur eine Doppel-DVD und ein 2-Disc-Blu-ray-Set zu finden. Ich wundere mich allerdings, warum das Blu-ray-Set aus zwei Discs besteht. Nur wegen der Dokumentation wäre eine Bonus-Disc ja nicht notwendig gewesen. Bei der Paramount-BD liegen Film und Doku ja auch auf einer Scheibe vor und der Film hat trotzdem eine sehr hohe Video-Datenrate von 38,80 Mbps. Hoffentlich geht ITV nicht den günstigen Weg und produziert nur eine Bonus-DVD für das DVD- und das Blu-ray-Set. Somit läge die Doku nur in Standard-Defintion vor, auf der US-Disc ist sie in HD.

Die britische “The African Queen”-Blu-ray soll erst am 6. September 2010 im Handel erscheinen, während das DVD-Set bereist am 14. Juni 2010 veröffentlicht wird. Wer allerdings nicht so lange auf die Blu-ray warten möchte, sollte einmal bei HMV.com vorbeischauen. Dort wird die Blu-ray als “Hmv Exclusive” mit dem 14. Juni 2010 als Veröffentlichungstermin geführt.
