The important news here is that New Line intends to release Harold’s films ALL AT THE SAME TIME. This is really great news. Other studios/distributors wanted to release one title and “wait and see how it does.” New Line really believes in Harold Lloyd and we’re happy with the way things are progressing.
We have suggested that the films come out in four different box sets with three discs per set. Each box would have at least three features and some shorts. You’d also be able to buy the whole collection in a gift box set which should include a few more bells and whistles. All of this is currently under discussion.
I don’t have any news on the international DVDs. Studio Canal has taken DVD rights in France and international distribution. They aren’t as far along as New Line and I don’t know what their plans are. I do know they plan to release Safety Last theatrically in France. If you live in Paris get ready for Harold Lloyd. They’re discussing some over-the-top marketing ideas. The movies are being released internationally, we just don’t know which titles and when. We’ve been told a release this year.

The deal with New Line includes ALL of Harold's films. To date we have about 85 in our archive. Only 31 titles have been digitally restored. And, as I mention above, the plan is to release 27 of those titles some time in October/November. Chances are, we’ll release 28 titles (Cat’s Paw and Milky Way will most likely replace Welcome Danger.)
As far as the remaining shorts go, I'm sure if enough people buy the first package, there will be incentive to restore and score more of the shorts. I personally want to see "Over the Fence," the first 'glasses' picture but it will need major restoration.
When we mentioned that we wanted a deal that would include ALL the films we meant that there were many companies that wanted to cherry pick a title here and there. You might get ''Safety Last" but never find a company that wants to release "Girl Shy." New Line is releasing ALL the silent features and many of the sound titles. There are some short films too. This is a very good deal for Harold fans.
For now, we have 28 of the very best titles coming out before the holidays.

Einige (Grandma's Boy, I Do, Number, Please?, An Eastern Westerner und Bumping Into Broadway) findet man schon auf der Lloyd Collection von Kino, viele andere nicht (dafür findet man Are Crooks Dishonest, His Royal Slyness und Just Neighbors nicht in der New Line liste aber in der Kino Collection). Freut mich zwar, wird aber sicher kein preiswerter Spass.

Die News, daß New Line viele Titel von Harold Lloyd veröffentlichen wird, hatte ich auch schon vor einiger Zeit gelesen. Die Titel-Liste war mir aber auch neu. Billig wird das aber bestimmt nicht, besodners, wenn das Gift-Set auch noch einige Dinge mehr enthalten wird. Trotzdem eine schöne Sache und bei New Line denke ich, daß die Titel in guten Händen sind. Allerdings werden das auch die ersten Klassiker aus dem Hause sein, oder gibt es da schon andere Filme? Bisher haben die doch nur ihre eigenen Filme veröffentlicht, dann aber meistens in toller Qualität.
Wenn die internationalen Rechte bei StudioCanal liegen, kann man dann wohl hierzulande mit den Titeln von Kinowelt rechnen?

Ehrlich gesagt kann ich mir das nicht so recht vorstellen. Ich glaube es ist nicht übertrieben zu behaupten das Deutschland was Stummfilme angeht einer der mit Abstand schlechtesten Märkte überhaupt ist.
Es wäre sicher ein fener Zug von Kinowelt, aber ich müsste es sehen um es zu glauben.

Da ist natürlich etwas dran. Wenn man sieht, was Labels wie Kino on Video oder jetzt auch Masters of Cinema in den USA und GB an Stummfilmen auf den Markt bringen, sieht es hier wirklich düster aus. Die Transit-Titel sind wirklich toll, aber zwei bis drei Veröffentlichungen sind einfach zu wenig. Traurig, besonders bei dem filmischen Status, den Deutschland zur Zeit der Weimarer Republik hatte. Andere Länder scheinen mehr Interesse an unserer Filmgeschichte zu haben, als wir selbst.
Es könnte wirklich sein, daß Harold Lloyd in Deutschland einfach zu unbekannt ist. Ich wüßte auch nicht, wann das letzte Mal im deutschen Fernsehen ein Film von ihm lief. Vielleicht war da mal nicht etwas auf arte, bin mir aber nicht mehr sicher. Hat Kinowelt eigentlich schon Stummfilme im Programm, außer Hitchcocks "Blackmail" und den "Laurel & Hardy-Filmen?

Hi,
Bie Kinowelt würden mir jetzt nur die Riefenstahl Sachen einfallen, aber das ist ja auch eher wegen dem Namen (wie Hitch und "Dick und Doof" auch). Transit steht zwar als leuchtendes Bsp. da, aber ein wirklicher Vergleich sind die nicht. Ich meine die hohlen ja die Kosten durch Verkäufe ihrer restaurierten Master (Spanien, MoC, Kino usw.) doppelt wieder rein, das ist das DVD Veröffentlichen eingentlch nicht Provitträger wie bei z.B. Kinowelt Home entertainment.

Bei der Harold Lloyd Community gibt es neue Infos:

It should be a great DVD pack. (I saw a piece last night that Annette did that is just amazing on HL film locales.) |
